If you've been glued to Margo's Got Money Troubles on Apple TV+, you're not alone. The show, based on Rufi Thorpe's acclaimed novel, has become a streaming sensation thanks to its blend of sharp comedy, heartfelt drama, and a cast that includes Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Nick Offerman. But fans of the book noticed some big changes in the finale—especially concerning Margo's mother, Shyanne. ShowtimeSpot sat down with executive producer Eva Anderson to unpack those decisions and get a glimpse of what's coming in Season 2.
Why the Finale Changed Shyanne's Role
In Thorpe's novel, Shyanne is complicit when her boyfriend Kenny calls Child Protective Services on Margo. But in the show, Shyanne is blindsided by the call. Anderson explains that the change came down to one person: Michelle Pfeiffer. "As soon as we knew Michelle Pfeiffer was going to play Shyanne, there was no way that it would be the Shyanne who disappears from the middle of the book," Anderson says. "When you see Elle and Michelle together—because Elle was in I Am Sam with Michelle when she was three years old—their dynamic is so intense, and so loving, and so combative, but you can tell that they're almost like sisters."
Anderson adds that this version of Shyanne would never risk Margo's safety. "We did not feel like the Shyanne in the show could have done that to Margo. They're too similar. Shyanne would know what would happen if she made that decision." Instead, the show makes Kenny the villain, a man who "believes that systems work to protect you" and couldn't foresee the damage. It's a subtle but powerful shift that deepens the mother-daughter bond.
Why JB Was Cut (Mostly) From Season 1
Another major change: JB, a key romantic interest in the book, is only briefly mentioned in the finale. Anderson says the team wanted to keep Margo focused on her baby, her family, and her legal troubles. "We just wanted to make sure that we didn't get Margo into a romantic relationship while she had so much else going on," she explains. "Actually seeing her with that baby the first season, while stuff's going on with her family, and stuff's going on legally, we did realize that throwing Margo into a romantic relationship on top of that might make us question her seriousness in terms of protecting her kid." But don't count JB out: "Don't count JB out. He's flown out there somewhere."
Season 2: Wrestling, Family Drama, and More
Since our interview, Apple TV+ officially renewed the show for a second season. Anderson couldn't reveal specifics at the time, but she hinted at rich possibilities. "There's a lot more wrestling for Jinx to get into. The Jinx in the book isn't just a wrestler—he's a wrestling manager—and the world of wrestling is so big." She also teased Shyanne and Kenny's fractured relationship, Margo's next career move, and the baby growing up. "You can just picture entire universes for these characters years and years forward in their lives."

The Toughest Roles to Cast
Anderson says the most challenging—and fun—roles to cast were KC and Rose, two quirky characters from the book. "Our casting director, Dave Rubin, spent a really long time going into different parts of the entertainment industry—not just actors, but musicians, models, dancers—and saw who was out there who could possibly bring a real, unique energy." They eventually found Lindsey Normington, who brought the perfect offbeat vibe. With Season 2 on the horizon, Anderson promises more of the show's signature tone—funny, messy, and deeply human. "Really anything is possible when you have these amazing, amazing characters and this amazing cast."
