Netflix's new action thriller Man on Fire is shaping up to be the perfect weekend binge for fans of Reacher and gritty, character-driven action. Director Steven Caple Jr., known for Creed II and The Land, helmed the first two episodes, setting the tone for a series that dives deep into the psyche of a broken mercenary.
Based on A.J. Quinnell's five-book series, Man on Fire expands on the character of John Creasy, famously played by Denzel Washington in Tony Scott's 2004 film. This time, Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II steps into the role, bringing a raw vulnerability to a man haunted by severe PTSD after losing his entire team on a mission. The series follows Creasy as he attempts to find redemption, only to be pulled back into a world of violence after a devastating attack.
In an interview with Collider, Caple Jr. revealed the meticulous attention to detail that went into crafting Creasy's world. One of the smallest yet most telling details? The character's shoes. "Does John Creasy even care?" Caple Jr. recalled asking. The team settled on low-end Doc Martens with no ankle support, reflecting a man who simply grabbed whatever clothes were available, indifferent to his own safety. Abdul-Mateen even brought in his own shoes for testing, underscoring the collaborative effort to define the character's look.
Caple Jr. emphasized the importance of making the series stand out on Netflix. "We really wanted to tap into the world that we're about to capture," he said. The production shot on location in Brazil, including the favelas of Rocinha, using real Brazilian actors to ensure authenticity. The director also paid homage to Tony Scott's visual style, incorporating extreme close-ups and moody shadows while avoiding direct replication of the original film's iconic moments.
The series doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of Creasy's mental health. Caple Jr. was drawn to the project because of its exploration of suicide and redemption. "Personally, I had a friend who did commit suicide," he shared, explaining that the cold open—a scene where Creasy contemplates ending his life under a highway bridge—was what hooked him. The show aims to portray Creasy's mental state with unflinching honesty, showing the monster he fears he still is.
For fans of Reacher and other hard-hitting action series, Man on Fire offers a similar blend of brutal combat and psychological depth. The action sequences, particularly in Episode 2, are massive and practical, with Abdul-Mateen performing many of his own stunts. Caple Jr. broke down the balance between VFX and practical effects, ensuring every punch and explosion feels visceral and real.
