Ten years ago, Makoto Shinkai unveiled what many consider his masterpiece, Your Name, at Anime Expo in Los Angeles. The film instantly became a cultural phenomenon, blending a body-swap premise with emotional depth and stunning animation. Now, to mark its anniversary, the beloved anime is returning to theaters in a stunning 4K remaster, courtesy of GKIDS.
Starting August 14, 2026, audiences can once again experience the story of Mitsuha and Taki on the big screen. The rerelease will offer both the original Japanese audio with English subtitles and the English dub, featuring Michael Sinterniklaas (The Venture Bros.) as Taki and Stephanie Sheh (Naruto) as Mitsuha. This theatrical run coincides with the film's 4K Ultra HD steelbook and Blu-ray release on August 25, giving fans their first chance to own the remastered version at home.
Directed by Shinkai and animated by CoMix Wave Films, Your Name follows two high school students who mysteriously swap bodies one morning. As they navigate each other's lives, they forge a unique connection, only to discover a devastating twist that tests their bond across time and space. The film's emotional roller coaster is amplified by the iconic score from the band Radwimps.
Upon its original release, Your Name shattered records, becoming the highest-grossing original Japanese animated film worldwide with over $400 million. It famously dethroned Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away from that top spot, cementing Shinkai's status as a modern animation legend. The film also earned accolades from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Japan Academy.
Shinkai, who had already made a name with films like 5 Centimeters Per Second, solidified his reputation with this 2016 hit. Since completing his "disaster trilogy" with Suzume in 2022, he has been working on his next project, teasing more details in late 2025. Meanwhile, a live-action adaptation of 5 Centimeters Per Second was released last year, earning Shinkai's praise, and a Hollywood live-action version of Your Name remains in development at Paramount.
