Gandalf the Grey—later Gandalf the White—is one of the most beloved figures in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. Played by Sir Ian McKellen in the films, the wizard is known for his wit, wisdom, and surprising combat skills. As a Maia, a kind of demigod-like spirit, he's certainly no pushover. But even Gandalf has his limits. Across Tolkien's legendarium, several beings surpass him in raw power, influence, or sheer invincibility. Here are the Lord of the Rings characters who are stronger than Gandalf, ranked from least to most formidable.
10. Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs
Gothmog is the chieftain of the Balrogs, the fiery demon-like beings that serve Morgoth. In the First Age, he led the assault on the hidden elven city of Gondolin and personally slew its king. Gandalf the Grey barely survived his battle with Durin's Bane, a lesser Balrog, and that fight cost him his life. Against Gothmog, Gandalf the Grey would stand no chance. However, as Gandalf the White—after his resurrection—he might have fared better. Still, in his original form, Gothmog would likely crush him.
9. Saruman the White
Saruman, played by Sir Christopher Lee, is the head of the Istari (the wizards) and explicitly stated to be the most powerful of the five. Gandalf himself admits this in The Hobbit films. During the events of The Lord of the Rings, Saruman defeats Gandalf in a magical duel, imprisoning him atop Orthanc. While Gandalf the White might have been a closer match, Gandalf the Grey was clearly outmatched. Saruman's ambition and mastery of sorcery make him a serious threat.
8. Sauron, the Dark Lord
Sauron is the primary antagonist of the trilogy and, like Gandalf, a Maia. But he's the most powerful Maia to ever walk Middle-earth. He forged the One Ring and nearly enslaved all free peoples. In The Hobbit films, Sauron effortlessly defeats Gandalf when the wizard confronts him at Dol Guldur. Even without the Ring, Sauron's influence and destructive capacity far exceed Gandalf's. Killing his physical form isn't enough—his spirit endures.
7. Tom Bombadil
Tom Bombadil is one of Middle-earth's greatest enigmas. No one knows his origin or purpose. He lives a reclusive life in the Old Forest, seemingly unaffected by the troubles of the world. In the book The Fellowship of the Ring, the One Ring has no power over him—he can wear it without turning invisible or being tempted. Gandalf, by contrast, refused to even touch the Ring, fearing its corrupting influence. While Tom isn't a fighter, his immunity to Sauron's greatest weapon suggests a power beyond Gandalf's comprehension.
6. Smaug the Terrible
Smaug, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch in The Hobbit trilogy, is a firedrake of immense size and cunning. He destroyed the dwarf kingdom of Erebor and hoarded its treasure. When the dwarves ask Gandalf about his dragon-slaying experience, he dodges the question—implying he's never killed one. Very few in Middle-earth have, and none of them are wizards. Gandalf likely couldn't defeat Smaug alone; the dragon's fire and armor would overwhelm him. If Gandalf could have handled Smaug, he would have done so long before the quest began.
5. The Valar
The Valar are the archangelic beings who shaped the world. They include Manwë, Varda, Ulmo, and others. Gandalf, as a Maia, serves them. The Valar are far more powerful than any Maia, including Sauron. They could have destroyed Morgoth themselves but chose to limit their intervention. In a direct confrontation, any Valar would effortlessly overpower Gandalf.
4. Morgoth (Melkor)
Morgoth, the original Dark Lord, was the most powerful Valar before his fall. He corrupted Sauron and created the Balrogs. His power was so immense that even the combined might of the Valar struggled to contain him. Gandalf, even as the White, would be no match for Morgoth's raw destructive force.
3. Ungoliant
Ungoliant is a giant spider-like being of darkness who helped Morgoth destroy the Two Trees of Valinor. She was so powerful that even Morgoth feared her. She could drain light and life from anything. Gandalf's magic, based on light and fire, would be useless against her. She would likely consume him.
2. Eärendil
Eärendil is a half-elf, half-man who sailed to Valinor and became a star. He wielded a Silmaril, a holy light, and defeated Ancalagon the Black, the greatest dragon ever. His power is celestial, far beyond Gandalf's. As a star, he watches over Middle-earth, but if he descended, he could annihilate Gandalf.
1. Eru Ilúvatar
Eru Ilúvatar is the supreme deity of Tolkien's universe, the creator of all. He is omnipotent and exists outside of time and space. Gandalf, like all beings, is a creation of Eru. There is no contest—Eru could unmake Gandalf with a thought. He is the ultimate power in Middle-earth.
