The first season of HBO's Lanterns has officially wrapped, and while Green Lantern fans are still dissecting that finale, the bigger question looms: will there be a second season? DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran has finally offered some clarity on the timeline for that decision, and it comes with a major caveat.

Speaking with Collider's Steve Weintraub ahead of Clayface's premiere, Safran revealed that fans should expect news about a potential Lanterns Season 2 "before the end of the year." That gives viewers a rough window, but it's far from a confirmation. Safran made it clear that no renewal has been announced yet, and the fate of the series rests on one crucial factor: the quality of the story being developed in the writers' room.

A Worthy Successor Is the Key

According to Safran, DC isn't interested in continuing Lanterns just for the sake of it. The studio wants a follow-up that can stand alongside what he considers a standout first season. "If we're able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that's what's going to dictate whether there's a second season," he explained.

When asked directly whether the writers' room coming up with something worthy was the deciding factor, Safran answered with a simple "Yes." He gave the same response when asked if that was what they were waiting on. So while the next chapter is actively being developed, a second season remains conditional—not guaranteed.

Bringing Green Lantern Back into the Conversation

Safran's enthusiasm for the first season is palpable. He pointed to the show's success in revitalizing a property that had been tarnished since the 2011 Green Lantern film. "This was one great season of television based on a property that had been somewhat irradiated since 2011, right?" Safran said. "The thing that's most gratifying about this show and this season on HBO is that it's brought Green Lantern back into the conversation, into the public culture in a really positive fashion."

That's no small feat. With Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King at the helm, Lanterns took a grounded approach, focusing on the complicated relationship between Aaron Pierre's John Stewart and Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan, set against a mystery in the American heartland. The eight-episode season gave DC fans a fresh take on the cosmic hero, and it clearly resonated.

Hal Jordan's Fate Still a Mystery

Of course, the finale left viewers with plenty of questions—chief among them the fate of Hal Jordan. The season ended with John charging his ring, a moment that has sparked intense debate about whether Hal is truly dead. Safran, however, wasn't about to spoil anything. "I can't weigh in on what it means when he charges the ring at the end of the season," he said, leaving fans to speculate until further notice.

That ambiguity extends to the show's future as well. While Safran's comments offer a rough timeline, they don't guarantee a renewal. For now, all eight episodes of Lanterns are streaming on HBO Max, and fans will have to wait a bit longer for definitive word on Season 2. If the writers can crack a story worthy of the first season, a return seems likely—but in the world of DC, nothing is certain until it's official.
