Root plays Brian Heder, a seasoned drug smuggler who takes Jason under his wing in the game's story. The character was introduced in the second trailer, and fans immediately pegged Root as the voice behind him. Now, in an interview with the Associated Press, Root confirmed the speculation, saying, "Yeah, you're gonna see me in there."
Root's voice is unmistakable, especially to fans of King of the Hill, where he voices both Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland. Brian's gravelly tone leans closer to Buck, and that connection made the identification easy for eagle-eyed viewers. Root joked that Rockstar's secret didn't last long once the trailer dropped.
"I'm so happy to be involved," Root said, adding that the game is "an amazing thing to look at." His confirmation makes him one of the first major cast members to publicly attach his name to the project, a rarity for Rockstar, which has kept even the lead actors under wraps.
Brian Heder is described as a former smuggler from the golden age of drug trafficking in the Florida Keys. He now runs a boatyard with his third wife, Lori, and prefers to let others take the risks. In the game, he appears to serve as an early mentor or employer for Jason, suggesting Root's character could play a pivotal role in the opening chapters of the story.
Root joins a long tradition of recognizable actors in Grand Theft Auto supporting roles. Past games have featured the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Ray Liotta, Kyle MacLachlan, and Burt Reynolds. While Rockstar has moved away from casting major celebrities as protagonists, Root's performance proves that supporting characters can still leave a lasting impression.
