There's a fresh face taking charge at Mid-Wilshire Division. The Rookie has enlisted Dulé Hill to play Lt. Hughes, a new Watch Commander, for its upcoming ninth season. The announcement came from showrunner Alexi Hawley during New York Comic Con in October. According to Deadline, Hughes is "a distracted, 30-year veteran of the job trying to navigate his new job as Watch Commander while his personal life is in growing turmoil." He steps into a role previously held by Tim Bradford (Eric Winter), who was abducted in the Season 8 cliffhanger, and Wade Grey (Richard T. Jones), now on an FBI task force.
Hill is no stranger to television, with credits including The West Wing, Suits, Ballers, and the 2021 The Wonder Years. But for many, he's best known as Burton "Gus" Guster in Psych. That USA Network series is the perfect placeholder for The Rookie fans waiting until the show returns on January 6, 2027. It shares many genre elements but with a lighter, comedic touch. Bingeable and entertaining, it's a great way to get your Hill fix and pass the time.
What Is 'Psych' About?
Think of Psych as a comedic Sherlock Holmes tale. It follows Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez), a fake psychic detective, and his best friend Gus (Hill) as they consult for the Santa Barbara Police Department. Shawn's father trained him to be hyper-observant, and after using those skills to solve crimes via news reports, he pretends to be psychic to avoid arrest. He then recruits Gus to start their agency. While Watson was a doctor, Gus is a pharmaceutical sales rep, which still comes in handy. The show features a strong ensemble, including Henry Spencer (Corbin Bernsen), Chief Karen Vick (Kirsten Nelson), Detectives Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) and Juliet O'Hara (Maggie Lawson), and coroner Woody Strode (Kurt Fuller).
Created by Steve Franks, Psych aired from 2006 to 2014 on USA, even including a musical episode. It spawned three movies: Psych: The Movie, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, and Psych 3: This is Gus. The series is known for its pop culture nods, running gags like a pineapple in every episode, Shawn's endless nicknames for Gus, and the repeated destruction of Gus's beloved "Blueberry" car. Yet the cast could handle serious moments with real dramatic weight.
Procedural Tropes and Shared DNA
Hill has proven his range across drama and comedy, so while The Rookie isn't a comedy, he'll bring that playful energy. Psych subverts typical procedural intensity but still hits familiar beats: a strong leader, slow-burn romance, capable female characters, and a tight-knit team in sunny California. Both shows experiment with format—Psych has homage episodes to Twin Peaks and Friday the 13th, while The Rookie has done documentary and found-footage styles. They also tackle corruption and bureaucracy within law enforcement.
Fans will notice parallels between the villains. Rosalind Dyer (Annie Wersching) in The Rookie and Mr. Yang (Ally Sheedy) in Psych are both female serial killers who play deadly games with the protagonists. And like Lucy Chen's (Melissa O'Neil) near-death burial, Jules faces a life-threatening situation. Psych doesn't shy away from the aftermath of trauma.
Even the "later-in-life rookie" trope appears in Psych—in the Season 1 finale, Lassie is paired with Detective Goochberg (Mercedes Ruehl), who finally passes the detective exam after years. Unlike John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), she fails due to lack of skill and empathy.
With two months until The Rookie returns, Psych is the logical choice. You can stream all eight seasons on Prime Video. And if you're looking for more binge-worthy options, check out books for fans of Prime Video hits or what's trending on Prime Video.
