Keegan-Michael Key, the comedic powerhouse known for Key & Peele and his recent turn as Toad in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is venturing into the cosmos. The actor has been tapped to narrate Einstein's Incredible Universe, a new IMAX and giant-screen docufilm from Cosmic Picture that promises to take audiences on a mind-bending journey through space and time.

The project, directed by Daniel Ferguson, will explore Albert Einstein's most revolutionary thought experiments, from supermassive black holes to gravitational waves. While an exact release date hasn't been locked, Cosmic Picture has confirmed the film will arrive in spring 2027, making it one of the most anticipated science documentaries of the decade.

Why Key Was the Perfect Choice

Ferguson, who previously earned an IMAX Hall of Fame honor for his work on Jerusalem, explained that Key's unique blend of humor and intellect made him ideal for the role. In a statement, Ferguson revealed that he discovered Key's podcast and book A Short History of Sketch Comedy while searching for the right narrator.

"I was already a huge Key and Peele fan, but listening to it, I became convinced that Keegan could do everything the script demanded," Ferguson said. "There are some pretty esoteric concepts to impart, but there is also a lot of awe, humour, weirdness, even silliness, so I wanted someone who could lean into all that. I didn't want a typical voice of God, but something more interactive and spontaneous."

Key's improvisational skills were a major draw, with Ferguson admitting he nearly had to leave the studio because Key had him laughing so much. The actor's science bona fides are well established—he previously hosted Brain Games on National Geographic, a series that delved into the quirks of human perception.

A New Chapter for Key

While Key remains a beloved comedy figure, he's been expanding his horizons with ambitious projects. Earlier this year, he reprised his role as Toad in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which became the first film of 2026 to cross $1 billion globally. He also hinted that a third Mario movie is in development at Universal, though fans shouldn't expect it before 2029.

For those eager to see Key in a different light, Einstein's Incredible Universe offers a fresh opportunity. The docufilm is designed for IMAX and giant screens, promising a visually stunning experience that brings Einstein's theories to life. It's a far cry from the sketch comedy that made him famous, but it's a natural fit for an entertainer who's always been curious about the world.

As the release date approaches, expect more details about the film's scope and Key's narration style. Until then, fans can revisit his past work, including his favorite space movies or catch up on his recent memoir-worthy stories from his career.

With Einstein's Incredible Universe, Key is set to prove that comedy and science can coexist beautifully, making complex ideas accessible and entertaining for audiences of all ages.
