Giant monsters are having a moment. After Godzilla Minus One stomped its way to an Oscar and Legendary's MonsterVerse kept the box office roaring, a fresh contender is rising from the depths. Kaiju: Island of Fire is officially in production in Japan, and ShowtimeSpot has an exclusive first look at its expanding cast—a lineup that reads like a who's who of kaiju cinema.

The latest additions include Yuki Morita (Godzilla), Jason Schombing (Timecop), Jerry Tremble (Heat), Dylan Schombing (Warcraft), and Seth Whittaker (Batwoman). They join previously announced stars such as Wes Wing (Godzilla Minus Zero), Tom Constantine (Snake Eyes), Robert Scott Field (Hoshi 35), Tomoko Ai (Terror of Mechagodzilla), Chuck Wilson (Two Homelands), Masaaki Neguchi (Made in Vancouver), Yoshiro Uchida (Gamera: The Giant Monster), Linda Miller (King Kong Escapes), Carl Craig (Gamera vs. Viras), and Inge Murata (Shin Godzilla).

Top 10 Martial Arts Movies of the 2020s, Ranked: From Brutal Brawls to Multiversal Mayhem
The 2020s have delivered a surprising number of martial arts gems, blending classic choreography with fresh storytelling. Here are the best of the decade so far, ranked.

Notably, several cast members previously shared the screen in 1991's Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, a fan-favorite entry that marked the return of Godzilla's three-headed nemesis. Field, Wilson, and Gilbert all appeared in that classic, making Kaiju: Island of Fire a reunion of sorts for kaiju loyalists.

What Is Kaiju: Island of Fire About?

The plot follows a construction crew dispatched to a remote, ancient Japanese island to build a new military base. When the team vanishes, a multinational joint task force—military and scientific—is sent to retrieve them. What they discover is a fiery hellscape, and they must fight for survival against the colossal creature that rules the island. The film is designed as the first installment in a planned franchise, so don't expect the monster to be permanently vanquished by the final scene.

Directed by veteran stunt performer Andrew L. Phillips—whose credits include Captain America: The First Avenger, World War Z, and The Dark Knight Rises—this is his second feature after 2021's Le Retour du Samouraï. Phillips also wrote the screenplay. The film is produced by James H. Christy and Avery Guerra under the Northstar Pictures banner.

With a cast steeped in monster-movie history and a premise that promises old-school kaiju thrills, Kaiju: Island of Fire is shaping up to be a must-watch for genre fans. The film is expected to release later this year.
