On the surface, Hulu's Furious might seem like a grim crime thriller, but creator Liz Meriwether has woven in a dry, dark humor that keeps viewers hooked. That wit is a lifeline through the show's heavier moments, and it's a big reason why FBI agent Nora Washington—played with deadpan brilliance by Quincy Tyler Bernstine—has become a fan favorite.
The season finale delivered major twists: the investigation leads to billionaire Jay Easton (Peter McRobbie), a standoff ends with serial killer Catherine Grace (Lola Petticrew) in custody, and agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) plays a secret role in Easton's death. Now the FBI holds a flash drive full of videos of victims, including Alice. Nora urges her partner to watch them when she's ready, and she makes it clear to their corrupt boss, ASAC Ed George (Danny McCarthy), that anyone even tangentially involved in Easton's trafficking ring should be worried.
In an interview ahead of the finale, Bernstine shared how she landed the role, what it was like to step into Nora's shoes, and who she'd love to see Nora take down if the show returns for a second season.
From Couch to Cast: Bernstine's Lucky Break
Bernstine's journey to Furious started in an unexpected place. "Last July, I was sitting on my couch watching Dying for Sex, thinking, 'What an extraordinary show—wouldn't it be amazing to work with Liz Meriwether someday?'" she recalled. "Then I checked my email and my agent had asked if I'd like to Zoom with Liz about adapting Black Widow." After reading the sides and the pilot, and learning Emmy Rossum was attached, she was all in. "I had a Zoom, a chemistry read, and here we are."
Finding Nora's Voice
Nora is a character who jumps off the page, and Bernstine found her in two key scenes: the hospital moment where Nora tells the Medusa story, and the car scene where she sings K-Ci & JoJo. "They were just such extreme things, and I saw who she was in those extremes," Bernstine said. "I knew I had to sink my teeth into this part."
Facing the Darkness
Playing someone who confronts humanity's worst every day took a toll, so Bernstine prepared by talking to real investigators. "They all talked about taking care of themselves physically and mentally, and how important family and sometimes religion were," she explained. "Nora doesn't have those tools, so I, Quincy, made sure I exercised and ate well to be the healthiest vessel for her to come out."
Nora's Season 2 Wishlist
When asked who she'd love to see Nora go after next, Bernstine didn't hesitate: "I want Nora to take down Ed George. He's been a thorn in her side, and after everything that happened with the flash drive, he deserves to be exposed." She added, "Nora has been waiting for the right moment, and I think Season 2 would be the perfect time for her to finally get justice."
