Winter may be coming, but it's taking a little longer than expected. The highly anticipated Game of Thrones strategy game War for Westeros, which promised to bring back fan-favorite Jon Snow for a do-over of the controversial series finale, has been delayed to early 2027. Developer Playside broke the news over the weekend, pushing the release from its original late 2026 window.
This delay comes during a banner year for the franchise. HBO treated fans to two new Game of Thrones shows for the first time ever in 2026. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, starring Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Soll Ansell as young Aegon Targaryen, was renewed for a second season before its first episode even aired. It's set to return to HBO Max in 2027. Meanwhile, the third season of House of the Dragon is currently airing, winning back fans after a polarizing Season 2 finale. That series will conclude after one more season.
For those craving a different kind of Westerosi experience, War for Westeros offers a tantalizing premise: players step into the boots of characters like Jon Snow to confront the Night King—a showdown that was built up for seasons but ultimately abandoned in the show's final episodes. The game aims to rewrite that history, giving fans the epic conclusion they felt was missing. As Playside stated, “We wanted to close with an update for our planned release window. War for Westeros will now launch in early 2027.”
While the wait is longer than hoped, the delay might allow the developers to polish the experience. For those eager to explore more of Westeros in the meantime, check out our coverage of Game of Thrones: Kingsroad's North Bannerman Duel Festival, which brings brutal combat to the realm.
Beyond games, Warner Bros. is also working on a Game of Thrones movie centered on Aegon's Conquest. The film is still in early development, but it promises to introduce Balerion the Black Dread—one of the most fearsome dragons in the franchise's history. While Balerion won't be at his peak size during the conquest, he'll still be a spectacle on screen.
As we wait for Jon Snow's return, fans can also revisit the series' most unforgettable moments. For a deeper dive, read our take on why the Red Wedding remains TV's greatest hour and why Jaime Lannister deserved a better ending.
