Tim Burton's most chilling horror film is getting a deluxe re-release just as a new adaptation rides into town. Sleepy Hollow, the 1999 gothic thriller starring Johnny Depp, will be available in a 4K SteelBook edition on September 22 — and the timing couldn't be more perfect, with Sydney Sweeney set to star in a reimagining of the classic tale.
Loosely based on Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the film was scripted by Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en) and earned Oscar nominations for its art direction, cinematography, and costume design. Burton crafted it as a love letter to Hammer Film Productions' classic horror movies, and the cast is a who's-who of character actors: Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon, Ian McDiarmid, Michael Gough, and even Hammer's own Dracula, Christopher Lee. The film earned a 71% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed over $200 million worldwide.
Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, a detective haunted by his past who is sent to the sleepy town of Sleepy Hollow in 1799 to investigate a series of gruesome decapitations. The locals blame the Headless Horseman, a legendary Hessian mercenary beheaded during the Revolutionary War. But this Horseman is no myth — he's a terrifying undead warrior with gnarly teeth, a detachable skull, and the chilling face of Christopher Walken. Crane soon discovers that a human mastermind is pulling the Horseman's reins, and his own head is next on the list. Along the way, he falls for local spiritualist Katrina Van Tassel (Christina Ricci), whose family is deeply entangled in the mystery.
The SteelBook edition includes a director's commentary by Tim Burton, the making-of documentary Behind the Legend, and the retrospective featurette Reflections on Sleepy Hollow. It's a must-have for collectors and fans of Burton's darker work.
Meanwhile, the Headless Horseman is set to ride again. Sony Pictures is developing Hollow, a new interpretation of the story by Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines). Sydney Sweeney will play Katrina, a woman caught in a supernatural love triangle. The project has already generated buzz, especially after Sweeney's recent success in horror and drama.
