Jennifer Lawrence has officially closed the door on playing Mystique again, and her reason is as clear as blue skin: the makeup chair. In a recent interview with Allure, the Oscar-winning actress explained why she won't be suiting up (or rather, painting up) for another X-Men movie, even as the franchise gears up for a Marvel Studios reboot.

Lawrence first slipped into Mystique's blue scales for 2011's X-Men: First Class, a role that came right after her breakout in Winter's Bone and alongside her star-making turn as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. She went on to play the shape-shifter in four films, including Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, and finally Dark Phoenix, where her character met a definitive end.

But the physical toll of becoming Mystique was immense. Lawrence told Allure that the hours spent in the makeup chair—sometimes up to eight hours for the first film—were a breaking point. "I learned how little sleep I can operate on and what can happen to the human mind when you've actually reached your breaking point," she said. "And patience!"

Despite the ordeal, Lawrence found joy in the physical side of the role. "My favorite part of playing Mystique was the stunts," she shared. "It was so fun to train in that way and learn how to move. I had the same stunt double, Renee Moneymaker, who was Katniss. She is one of my best friends, so that was great."

Her least favorite part? "Most certainly the paint." That sentiment is understandable—spending hours covered in heavy body paint would test anyone's patience, even a seasoned Hollywood star.

As the X-Men franchise prepares for a fresh start under Marvel Studios, fans have wondered if Lawrence might return. But with her clear stance, it seems unlikely. The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will feature Rebecca Romijn, who originally played Mystique in the early 2000s, reprising the role after two decades—a nostalgic nod for longtime fans.

While the new X-Men reboot has announced its central cast, Mystique remains uncast. Lawrence's departure leaves the door open for a fresh take on the character, one that might not require quite so much time in the makeup chair. For now, Lawrence is focusing on other projects, and fans can only hope her next roles are a little less... colorful.
