Fans hoping for a third adrenaline-fueled ride with Jason Statham's Chev Chelios may need to temper their expectations. Amy Smart, who co-starred as the loyal Eve in both Crank (2006) and Crank: High Voltage (2009), has offered a candid and disappointing update on the long-rumored threequel.
In an exclusive interview with ShowtimeSpot, Smart expressed doubt that Crank 3 will ever happen, despite the franchise's enduring cult status and vocal fan base. "I think we've all moved on in different directions," she said. "The timing never lined up, and creatively, it's hard to recapture that lightning in a bottle."
The Crank films, directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, were known for their hyper-kinetic style, dark humor, and over-the-top action. The first movie followed hitman Chev Chelios as he raced against time after being injected with a poison that required constant adrenaline to stay alive. The sequel, Crank: High Voltage, pushed the absurdity even further, with Chev's heart replaced by an artificial battery that needed regular jolts of electricity.
Smart's comments come as a blow to fans who have been clamoring for a conclusion to the cliffhanger ending of High Voltage, which saw Chev seemingly killed but then revived. Over the years, both Statham and the directors have hinted at ideas for a third film, but nothing ever materialized. "There were talks, but they never got past the brainstorming stage," Smart revealed. "Jason is incredibly busy, and the directors have their own projects. It's just one of those things that never clicked."
Statham, now one of Hollywood's biggest action stars, has been focused on franchises like The Expendables and Fast & Furious, as well as recent hits like A Working Man, which is currently dominating HBO Max. His packed schedule leaves little room for a return to the indie-style chaos of Crank.
Smart, meanwhile, has continued to work steadily in film and television, recently appearing in the neo-Western Broken Land opposite David Morse. She remains proud of her Crank legacy, calling it "one of the most fun and wild experiences of my career."
While the door isn't completely closed, Smart's update suggests that Crank 3 is unlikely to get the green light anytime soon. For now, fans can revisit the first two films, which remain available on streaming platforms, and enjoy Statham's other action-packed outings like The Expendables franchise, which leaves Netflix on June 20.
As for the future of Chev Chelios, it seems the character's heart may have finally stopped beating for good.
