Three years after Godzilla Minus One stomped its way into cinematic history, the King of the Monsters is ready to return. The first trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero has officially dropped, and it promises another epic clash between humanity and the iconic kaiju—this time with even more at stake.
Set in 1949, two years after the events of its predecessor, Godzilla Minus Zero finds Japan still struggling to rebuild from the devastation of World War II and Godzilla's previous rampage. Just as the nation begins to reclaim a sense of normalcy, a new threat emerges, crushing any hope of peace. The official synopsis teases: "War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here."
Director Takashi Yamazaki returns to helm this sequel, following his Oscar-winning reinvention that paired massive kaiju spectacle with an unexpectedly intimate story about survivors. The cast is led once again by Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima, with Minami Hamabe reprising her role as Noriko Ōishi. They're joined by returning favorites Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.
New additions to the ensemble include Masami Nagasawa as Makoto Aoyama, a genius weather forecaster assigned to the Disaster Response Bureau, and Jun Kunimura as Dr. Ogata. Kisuke Iida also returns as Akio Itagaki, with Kenji Mizuhashi, Eita Okuno, and Kai Inowaki rounding out the cast.
The original Godzilla Minus One was a massive success, earning over $110 million worldwide on a modest budget and holding a 98% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. It made franchise history by winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, becoming the first Godzilla movie ever to take home an Oscar. For those who haven't seen it yet, the film is currently streaming on Netflix ahead of the sequel's release.
With the bar set so high, Godzilla Minus Zero has a lot to live up to. But if the trailer is any indication, Yamazaki is pulling out all the stops. The visuals are jaw-dropping, the stakes are higher than ever, and the emotional core remains as strong as before. Fans of the franchise—and of epic monster movies in general—have plenty to look forward to.
Godzilla Minus Zero opens in North American theaters and IMAX on November 6, 2026. Check out the brand-new trailer above to get your first look at the next chapter in this legendary saga.
