It's been five years since Daniel Craig hung up his tuxedo in No Time to Die, and the hunt for the next James Bond is finally heating up. But while fans have been busy dreaming up their ideal 007—from Jacob Elordi to Callum Turner to Harris Dickinson—the woman who used to hold the keys to the franchise isn't having any of it.

Debbie McWilliams, the veteran casting director who helped shape the Bond legacy for decades, has made her feelings crystal clear: she doesn't want to see any of those familiar faces in the role. In a recent interview, McWilliams explained that the next Bond must be a blank slate—someone the audience knows almost nothing about.

Guillermo del Toro, Ivana Baquero, Doug Jones, and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro will reunite at SDCC 2026 for a special 'Pan's Labyrinth' 20th anniversary panel, featuring never-before-seen footage.

“I don’t want to see any of them as Bond,” McWilliams said of the fan-favorite contenders. “It is absolutely essential that Bond retains a total enigma. We want to know as little about them as personally possible, because that’s what spies are.”

Her reasoning goes beyond mere preference. McWilliams argues that the character's mystique is central to his appeal. “We don’t need to know where he goes shopping or who his parents are or where he lives. We never want to see him at home. And a vital element of the whole thing is his job description. He’s licensed to kill, and we have to believe he can do that. If you don’t, then you’ve lost your audience.”

McWilliams pointed to past Bonds who weren't household names when they landed the role. “Timothy [Dalton] and Pierce [Brosnan] weren’t particularly well known. Daniel [Craig] had a career in independent films and a fairly romantic life beforehand, but he wasn’t a household name, and that helps enormously. I want to see somebody who is completely out of the blue.”

Meanwhile, the search for the next 007 is already underway. Nina Gold, the casting director behind Game of Thrones, has been tapped to find the new Bond. Gold has revealed that Amazon is looking for someone young enough to carry the franchise for at least three or four films, and who “oozes sex appeal.” The first round of auditions has reportedly wrapped, and candidates are being invited back for a second round in August.

Denis Villeneuve, fresh off his Dune triumphs, is set to direct the next Bond film, with a script from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. Plot details remain under wraps, but the project is moving forward at Amazon.

As for the fan campaigns for Henry Cavill or Idris Elba? McWilliams' comments suggest they're likely out of the running. Cavill, now 43, may be too old for the multi-film commitment Amazon envisions, while Elba has already taken himself out of contention. For now, the Bond casting race remains wide open—and McWilliams wants it that way.
