James Bond is back—but not as you know him. IO Interactive's 007 First Light, launching this May, introduces a raw, unrefined 007 played by Patrick Gibson, and not everyone is thrilled. The studio, however, is standing firm, arguing that a Bond who doesn't spark debate would be the dullest of them all.
The game, described as a playable origin story, hits PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on May 27, with Digital Deluxe Edition early access starting May 26. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is expected later this summer. This isn't the suave, martini-swilling veteran fans adore; instead, it's a younger agent still finding his footing—a choice that has ignited passionate reactions online.
Why Some Fans Are Unhappy
Hardcore Bond enthusiasts have voiced concerns over Gibson's portrayal, calling it too smug and far removed from the iconic character. But IO Interactive's team welcomes the debate. "People having different opinions about a James Bond, that's great," senior combat designer Tom Marchan told press. "If we made a Bond where no one had any opinions on them, it would be the dullest Bond ever made."
Narrative and cinematic director Martin Emborg added that many fans are judging this Bond through the lens of the seasoned spy they already know. "This is a young man that isn't all those things yet," Emborg explained. "There is maybe a little more on the line for this guy than your seasoned Bond." He emphasized that the character's core strengths are present, forming the foundation that will eventually make him 007.
This origin story approach allows players to witness Bond's evolution, a journey that IO Interactive hopes will resonate. The studio has even hinted that this could be the beginning of a larger narrative arc. Missions and audio director Dominic Vega noted, "As a studio, we have a long history of expanding things and remixing, so it's certainly not the last we've seen of Patrick [Gibson as Bond]. It is the beginning – it's up to the audience to decide how that goes."
