After surviving the Viltrumite War, a trip to Hell, and killing both Rus Livingston and Conquest, Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) finally makes it back to Earth in the Season 4 finale of Invincible, titled "Don't Leave Me Hanging Here." But this isn't the triumphant return fans might expect. Instead, the episode takes a somber, emotionally charged turn as Mark struggles with paranoia and guilt, delivering what might be the show's most mature ending yet.

A Nightmare Homecoming

The finale opens with a terrifying nightmare: Thragg's Viltrumite ship hovers above Earth, unleashing destruction. Mark wakes up frozen in fear aboard the ship, with his father Nolan (J.K. Simmons) trying to calm him. Zoe/Tech Jacket (Zoey Deutch) grows frustrated as Mark and Nolan ignore her questions about their return plan. Meanwhile, on Talescria, Allen (Seth Rogen) nervously prepares for his inauguration as leader of the Coalition of Planets, with Telia (Tatiana Maslany) offering support.

But his reunion with his mother Debbie (Sandra Oh) is cut short by a hallucination of Thragg ripping her head off. Debbie later confronts Nolan, blaming him for letting Oliver go to space. Nolan's attempts at reconciliation fall flat, and Debbie refuses to let him stay the night.

Eve's Heartbreaking Revelation

Mark visits Eve (Gillian Jacobs), who tearfully greets him. She reveals her powers have returned but admits she's been neglecting herself while helping her parents and putting Invincible Inc. on hold. At the GDA, Cecil (Walton Goggins) and Donald (Chris Diamantopoulos) test a portal to bring back Robot and Monster Girl, but it fails, unleashing a tentacled monster. Cecil reveals this is the second failed attempt, and they must find their own way home.

Allen struggles with the Coalition of Planets, who question his trust in Mark and Nolan. He refuses to endorse a genocide that could cause more deaths. Mark and Eve visit William and Rick at Upstate University, where Mark has another panic attack, hallucinating Anissa murdering students. Debbie vents to Paul about their breakup and her grief over not seeing Oliver.

In bed, Eve finally tells Mark why her powers stopped working. Before she can, Mark hallucinates Thragg killing her. After calming him, Eve admits she learned she was pregnant shortly before he left Earth and had an abortion, knowing she couldn't care for a child alone. Mark breaks down, apologizing for leaving her.

A Quiet but Powerful Conclusion

Nolan visits the crater where he attacked Mark in Season 1. Cecil arrives, admitting he'll always fear Nolan. Nolan reveals 40 Viltrumites are still in hiding, and Cecil angrily tells him to leave Earth. Back home, Eve wakes to find Mark wracked with guilt. He confesses they didn't truly beat the Viltrumites—they only gave them nothing to lose after destroying their planet.
