Hulu's dystopian sci-fi series The Testaments has quickly become one of the streaming service's biggest hits, and creator Bruce Miller is already looking ahead. In a recent interview, Miller revealed that he envisions the show spanning three or four seasons, though the final decision rests with Disney, Hulu, MGM, and Amazon. The update comes just weeks after the Season 1 finale aired on May 27, 2026, leaving fans hungry for more.
Based on Margaret Atwood's sequel novel, The Testaments picks up after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, which concluded its six-season run on May 27, 2025. The spin-off premiered on April 8, 2026, and was quickly renewed for a second season in May. Miller, who also created and served as showrunner on The Handmaid's Tale, stepped down from that role in March 2023 to focus on this adaptation. He executive produces the series and has made it clear he doesn't want the show to simply fade away like others that get canceled mid-stream.
What Happened in the Season 1 Finale?
The Season 1 finale, titled "Secateurs," aired on May 27, 2026, and was co-written by Miller. In a powerful climax, Agnes (Chase Infiniti) finally learns that June (Elisabeth Moss) is her biological mother. The episode sees Agnes and Daisy (Lucy Halliday) working together to save Becka (Mattea Conforti) after her arrest. Agnes convinces Commander Weston to release Becka, though he ends their engagement upon learning of her assault. Meanwhile, June enters Gilead to rescue Daisy but changes course after discovering Daisy knows her daughter. Daisy eventually reveals to Agnes that she is actually Hannah—the name June gave her before Gilead took her. As for Becka, she is married off to the newly promoted Commander Garth (Brad Alexander) for her protection after her mother sacrifices herself for Becka's father's murder.
The finale doesn't reunite Agnes and June, but it promises a hopeful future for the duo. Miller has hinted that bringing them together could also pave the way for more Handmaid's Tale characters to return, including Luke (O-T Fagbenle), June's husband and Agnes' biological father; Nichole, June's second daughter; and Moira (Samira Wiley), who helped raise Agnes. For fans of the original series, this is an exciting prospect that could deepen the already rich world.

What's Next for 'The Testaments'?
While a return date for Season 2 hasn't been announced, Miller's comments suggest the show has a clear roadmap. With three or four seasons in mind, the series could explore the aftermath of the finale's revelations and the ongoing struggle against Gilead. The show's success is a testament to the enduring appeal of Atwood's universe and Miller's skillful adaptation.
