Hulu has been on a roll with comedies lately, from the murder-mystery charm of Only Murders in the Building to the chaotic energy of The Bear. Now, the streamer has another winner on its hands with Phony, a quirky mystery-comedy that's quickly become a fan favorite.
Created by Nick Paley, Phony follows teenager Sonny Cook (Sam Nivola), who wakes up after an accident to discover that his mother, Ellen (Connie Britton), isn't actually his mother—she's been replaced by an impostor. The catch? No one else believes him, and Sonny is convinced this fake mom is dangerous.
The show has struck a chord with both critics and audiences, earning a 92% critic score and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. That near-unanimous praise is rare, and it's a testament to the show's unique blend of humor, heart, and mystery.
A Streaming Sensation
According to FlixPatrol, Phony is currently the third most-watched show on Hulu in the U.S., and it's even hit number one on days when new episodes drop (Tuesdays). Outside the U.S., it's streaming on Disney+, where it's also cracked the top ten in several countries.
The cast includes Grace Brennan, Maliq Johnson, Colter Lee, Meera Syal, and Mahaela Park, but it's Nivola and Britton who anchor the series with their compelling performances. Critics have noted that while the show doesn't break new ground thematically, it's "genuinely trippy" and "inviting," with a world you just want to hang out in.
Is 'Phony' Worth Your Time?
If you're looking for a binge-worthy series that's equal parts funny and mysterious, Phony is definitely worth a shot. The show's quirky vibe and central mystery have captivated viewers, and with new episodes arriving weekly, it's the perfect show to get hooked on.
