Zach Braff may not be headlining the summer's biggest blockbuster, but his knack for choosing resonant projects has kept him in the spotlight for two decades. While fans eagerly await the return of Scrubs for its second revival season this fall, Braff is also appearing in one of the most anticipated movie adaptations of the year: Girls Like Girls. Based on the iconic 2016 music video and novel by pop star Hayley Kiyoko, the film is set to hit limited theaters on June 19.
Focus Features has released a breathtaking first-look image from the R-rated coming-of-age romance, which Kiyoko both wrote and directed. The photo features Maya de Costa as Coley and Myra Molloy as Sonya, two young women whose connection sparks a transformative journey. De Costa recently broke out with her role as Maya Longette in Hulu's Under the Bridge, while Molloy is set to appear in the second season of Netflix's Untamed next year.
What Is 'Girls Like Girls' About?
The story follows Coley, a 17-year-old who moves from San Diego to Oregon after her mother's death. There, she meets Sonya, and the two develop an intense bond that challenges Coley's self-doubt. As their relationship deepens, they must rely on each other to navigate unfamiliar emotions and find their way through the darkness. Kiyoko, known for her music video direction and acting roles in Five Points, Insidious: Chapter 3, and CSI: Cyber, makes her feature writing and directorial debut with this project.
Kiyoko has also released new music tied to the film, including the title track, "red bikini," and "collide." Her second novel, Where There's Room for Us, recently hit shelves, further expanding the universe of Girls Like Girls.
For fans of emotional, visually stunning romances, this adaptation promises to deliver the same raw energy that made the original music video a viral sensation.
