Marvel Studios has long been known for its secrecy, but even by their standards, the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday has been shrouded in mystery. While trailers have teased the character's danger, few details have emerged about the actual performance—until now. Hayley Atwell, who stars alongside Downey, has offered one of the most revealing glimpses yet into what it's like to share the screen with the iconic villain.
In an exclusive interview with Collider at San Diego Comic-Con, Atwell described how Downey's portrayal of Doctor Doom fundamentally altered the atmosphere on set. She admitted she deliberately avoided learning too much about the character, preferring to let the performance speak for itself. “I didn’t ask, in part because his presence on set was so enigmatic as Doom,” she explained. “Robert, in between takes, he invites people to eat lunch with him, and he’s super open and fun and wants everyone to have a good time… But when he’s Doom, it’s so enigmatic. It’s so domineering that it’s really intimidating and very powerful.”
Atwell, who reprises her role as Peggy Carter, said she wanted to preserve that illusion throughout filming. “Also, when I was in scenes, I didn’t want that illusion to be broken for me,” she shared. “So I kept that feeling of, ‘I don’t know who this person really is and what they’re capable of, but I just know there’s a darkness there.’” This commitment to maintaining the mystery allowed her to channel genuine dread and uncertainty into her performance, making the scenes all the more compelling.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also addressed the character during Comic-Con, emphasizing that Avengers: Doomsday is designed as a true introduction to Doctor Doom. “This is a movie that introduces Doctor Doom to the world, and peels the onion on a fascinating, fascinating character,” Feige said. He compared Doom to other great Marvel villains like Green Goblin and Thanos, noting that every antagonist must work for newcomers first. The Russo Brothers, who direct the film, described Doom as “the smartest man in every room he walks into,” with mastery of both science and the Dark Arts—a combination that sets him apart from any foe the MCU has faced before.
Atwell's insights come as anticipation builds for the film, which has already shattered advance ticket sales records. The contrast between Downey's off-screen warmth and his on-screen menace has become a talking point, with fans eager to see how this new take on Doctor Doom will unfold. For those curious about the character's design, early looks at Doom's appearance have already sparked excitement.
As the MCU prepares to introduce this complex villain, Atwell's comments offer a rare behind-the-scenes perspective. Her decision to stay in the dark about Doom's motives mirrors the audience's own journey, ensuring that the character's menace remains palpable. With Avengers: Doomsday set to hit theaters on December 16, 2026, fans won't have to wait much longer to see the darkness for themselves.
