Santa Monica Studio just dropped a bombshell at San Diego Comic-Con: God of War Laufey is arriving much sooner than anyone expected. The highly anticipated spin-off, which puts the spotlight on the fierce warrior goddess from God of War: Ragnarök, now has a confirmed release date of February 16, 2027. That's a welcome surprise for fans who were bracing for a longer wait.

The announcement came during a dedicated panel over the weekend, where the studio not only revealed the new date but also debuted a fresh teaser trailer. This follows a strong showing at June's State of Play, where 20 uninterrupted minutes of gameplay footage wowed audiences. Since then, Santa Monica has been steadily feeding fans with clips and details on social media, building excitement for what promises to be a unique chapter in the God of War saga.

What Is God of War Laufey About?

Set shortly after the death of Faye (Laufey) in the 2018 God of War reboot, the game follows her journey through Everywhen, a kind of afterlife realm for gods. Players will control Laufey as she battles deities from various mythologies, including Begtse, the Mongolian God of War, and Sekhmet, the Egyptian God of War. The gameplay footage suggests even more mythological showdowns are on the horizon, with some fans speculating that Thor might make an appearance after his demise in Ragnarök—though that remains unconfirmed.

Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Laufey, having first voiced the character in 2022's God of War: Ragnarök. Her performance has already drawn praise, and this spin-off gives her the chance to fully command the narrative.

A Big Year for Gaming

2026 has already been packed with major releases, including 007 First Light from IO Interactive and a four-game drop on July 9 that brought Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, EA Sports College Football 27, and PS5 ports of Black Ops and Black Ops 2. Looking ahead, Marvel's Wolverine is set for September, followed by GTA 6 in November—Rockstar's first new title since Red Dead Redemption 2. But with God of War Laufey landing in early 2027, Santa Monica is carving out its own moment in the spotlight.

For fans of epic storytelling and mythological combat, this February date can't come soon enough. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach launch—and in the meantime, check out our coverage of other upcoming releases like Spider-Man: Brand New Day's timeline and The Rookie's extended cut.
