Halloween is creeping closer, and what better way to celebrate than with the iconic Ghostbusters franchise? Thanks to Fandango's free, ad-supported streaming service, fans can now enjoy three of the most beloved films in the series without spending a dime. It's the perfect excuse for a spooky movie marathon.
The original 1984 classic, directed by Ivan Reitman and starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis, kicked off the supernatural comedy craze. The film follows a trio of quirky parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. With its witty humor, memorable monsters, and stellar cast, it quickly became a cultural phenomenon, earning around $370 million worldwide on a modest budget and boasting a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Following the success of the original, the franchise expanded with sequels, animated series, video games, and more. Ghostbusters II (1989) reunited the original team for another Manhattan adventure, this time facing the evil Vigo the Carpathian. In 2016, director Paul Feig rebooted the series with Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, featuring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Chris Hemsworth. More recently, the franchise returned to its roots with Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024).
Now, Fandango is offering the original Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, and the 2016 reboot as part of its “Free to Scream” Halloween hub. The first film became exclusive to the platform on October 1, making it a prime destination for seasonal scares. This is a fantastic opportunity for both longtime fans and newcomers to experience the franchise's evolution.
While the original remains the critical and commercial high point, the sequels have their own charms. Ghostbusters II raises the stakes with a sinister portrait that threatens Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) and her infant son, while the 2016 reboot offers a fresh take with a new team facing a sudden spirit invasion. Each film brings its own flavor, ensuring there's something for every ghostbuster enthusiast.
