Get ready to yell "Yo, Joe!" again—Paramount has officially locked in a release date for its upcoming G.I. Joe reboot. The film, which has been in the works for a while, will storm into theaters on October 20, 2028, bringing the iconic Hasbro team back to the big screen.
The project is being written and directed by Danny McBride, best known for his work on The Righteous Gemstones and Eastbound & Down. McBride originally pitched Hasbro a movie centered on the Dreadnoks—the rowdy, swamp-dwelling mercenaries who often clash with the Joes—but the toy company convinced him to focus on the main team instead. The result is a fresh take on the special mission force that has been a staple of action since the 1980s.
This isn't the first time the Joes have tried to conquer Hollywood. The franchise kicked off with G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra in 2009, which, while not a box-office juggernaut like its Transformers cousins, spawned a sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, in 2013. Then came Snake Eyes in 2021, a spinoff that aimed to reboot the series but stumbled at the post-pandemic box office. Now, Paramount is giving it another shot, and this time they're bringing some serious star power.
So far, the only confirmed cast member is Bradley Cooper, who will play Conrad S. Hauser, better known as Duke, the fearless field leader of the G.I. Joe team. Cooper's casting adds a hefty dose of A-list appeal to the project, and fans are already buzzing about how he'll embody the classic hero.
Plot details are still under wraps, but McBride has hinted that he's drawing inspiration from Larry Hama's original 1980s G.I. Joe comic books. The story will reportedly take place in Springfield, a seemingly idyllic small town that's secretly under the control of Cobra, the nefarious terrorist organization bent on world domination. That setup promises a mix of suburban intrigue and high-octane action, a blend McBride seems perfectly suited to deliver.
The October 2028 release date is a strategic move, placing the film outside the crowded summer blockbuster season. That weekend is currently wide open, though horror fans will have Gremlins 3 and the animated Freddy the 13th to look forward to that month. Meanwhile, the first week of November will bring an untitled project from the Duffer Brothers, the minds behind Stranger Things, which Paramount snagged away from Netflix.
With two years to go, there's plenty of time for more casting announcements and a first trailer. But for now, the countdown is on. G.I. Joe is set to hit theaters on October 20, 2028. Stay tuned for more updates as they roll out.
