Hulu's gripping crime thriller Furious has kept viewers on edge with its cat-and-mouse dynamic between FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) and fledgling serial killer Catherine Grace (Lola Petticrew). But the season finale, which aired this week, took the story to a darker, more personal place—and Rossum is opening up about what it all means.
In the final episode, Alice and Catherine's paths collide at the mansion of wealthy businessman Jay Easton, who seemingly dies of a heart attack. But Catherine, now in prison, quickly deduces that Easton's death was no accident. With a damning flash drive in Alice's possession, the stage is set for an even more twisted Season 2—which Hulu has already confirmed.
Rossum sat down with Collider to discuss the pivotal shelter scene that forged an unlikely bond between Alice and Catherine, the complicated romance with Danny (Scoot McNairy), and the chilling final moments that hint at what's to come.
The Shelter Scene: A Foundation of Lies and Truth
Rossum praised creator Liz Meriwether for writing the shelter scenes in Episode 6, where Alice and Catherine first meet. "It's the first time Alice is really telling a true story about herself," Rossum said, referencing the moment Alice shares a personal memory about nearly dying in the shower. "Catherine knows that she's for real, even if she's not for real."
Rossum explained that Alice's lies about her identity paradoxically allow her to be more honest about her inner self. "She's a person who's most comfortable lying," Rossum noted. "But that bond is really formed in the shelter."
The connection is so strong that Alice's colleague Nora calls her out on it, asking if she actually liked Catherine. Alice denies it, but her actions—like finding Catherine in the bathroom—tell a different story. "There's a deep connection between these two people," Rossum said.
Alice and Danny: A Romance Built on Fragility
Rossum also delved into Alice's relationship with Danny, which is fraught with emotional complexity. "Whenever she starts to feel that there might be softness creeping in, she shuts it down," Rossum said. In the finale, Alice takes the lead in their intimacy, undressing Danny and setting the pace. "He says, 'I can't be rough with you,' and she says, 'I know,'" Rossum recalled.
Rossum described Alice as someone who doesn't believe she deserves justice for herself, carrying deep trauma and complex PTSD. "She's a person who has learned to separate from her vulnerability, from her emotions," Rossum explained. "She can function under extremely high-pressure circumstances."
The Final Scene: A Promise of Darkness
The finale's last moments show Alice looking directly at the camera twice—a jarring choice that Rossum says is intentional. "It's not an easy hit list," she said, hinting that Alice's motivations are far from clear-cut. The flash drive, combined with Catherine's knowledge, suggests that Alice may be heading down a path that blurs the line between hunter and hunted.
With Season 2 already in the works, fans are left to wonder: Is Alice truly seeking justice, or is she becoming something far more dangerous? Rossum's performance in the finale leaves no doubt that the answer will be anything but simple.
