There's nothing quite like the magic of a dark theater, a giant screen, and the smell of fresh popcorn. But even the most devoted moviegoer knows that not every trip to the cinema is a triumph. I've seen over 100 films a year in theaters for the past several years, and while I've witnessed masterpieces, I've also sat through some truly agonizing duds. Here are the worst movies I've ever had the misfortune of watching on the big screen.

10. 'Chaos Walking' (2021)

When theaters reopened in early 2021, I was so desperate to return that I'd watch almost anything. That desperation led me to Chaos Walking, a dystopian YA adaptation that was doomed from the start. The film suffered from massive production issues, and the studio essentially dumped it, knowing it would flop. Despite a talented cast including Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, the story is a mess—bafflingly paced and utterly devoid of the tension that made The Hunger Games work. It's a forgettable bomb, but I still remember the sinking feeling in my seat.

Charlize Theron delivers another powerhouse action-heroine performance in Netflix's 'Apex,' a survival thriller that's both visually stunning and pulse-pounding.

9. 'Jexi' (2019)

Comedies should be a joy in a theater, where laughter is contagious. But Jexi was so painfully unfunny that the silence in the room was deafening. This raunchy take on Her never commits to its premise, offering shallow jokes and characters you can't root for. The only memorable moment? A group of teenagers threw popcorn everywhere, which was infinitely more entertaining than the movie itself.

8. 'Madame Web' (2024)

Superhero fatigue is real, and Madame Web is Exhibit A. This Sony misfire is a cliché-ridden mess, with atrocious editing and obvious ADR that makes it feel like a patchwork of reshoots. It exists only to set up a sequel that will never come. While some find it so-bad-it's-good, one IMAX screening was enough for me. 7. 'The Son' (2022)

Florian Zeller's follow-up to the brilliant The Father is a disaster. The Son tackles depression with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer, using its teenage protagonist as a mere plot device to make Hugh Jackman's character suffer. It's manipulative, emotionally hollow, and frankly insulting. The inevitable ending left me feeling nothing but relief that it was over.

6. 'Cats' (2019)

Words cannot fully capture the horror of Cats. The uncanny valley CGI, the bizarre choreography, and the nonsensical plot made for an experience that felt like a fever dream. The audience around me was audibly confused and uncomfortable. It's a film that defies all logic, and I'm still not sure if I hallucinated the whole thing.

5. 'The Emoji Movie' (2017)

This cynical cash grab is a soulless parade of product placement and lazy jokes. Watching it in a theater full of kids who were too young to know better was depressing. It's the kind of movie that makes you question your life choices. For a list of truly awful animated films, see A Fan's Definitive Ranking of the Worst Animated Movies Ever Made.

4. 'Fant4stic' (2015)

The reboot no one asked for, Fant4stic is a joyless slog that wastes its cast. The second half is a rushed, incoherent mess that feels like a different movie. I walked out of the theater feeling cheated.

3. 'The Last Airbender' (2010)

M. Night Shyamalan's adaptation is a masterclass in how to ruin beloved source material. The acting is wooden, the pacing is glacial, and the whitewashing is inexcusable. Fans of the animated series, myself included, left the theater in a state of shock.

2. 'Movie 43' (2013)

This star-studded comedy is an anthology of gross-out sketches that are more offensive than funny. The theater was dead silent, and I felt embarrassed for everyone involved. It's a film that should never have been made.

1. 'Jack and Jill' (2011)

Adam Sandler's worst film is an unbearable exercise in lazy humor and painful stereotypes. I was 12 when I saw it, and even then I knew it was garbage. It remains the gold standard of cinematic awfulness.

These films remind me that even the most passionate moviegoer can have a bad night at the theater. But hey, it makes the good movies even sweeter.
