It's been over three decades since a boy named Jesse taught us all the meaning of friendship with a killer whale named Willy. Now, that beloved story is getting a fresh take, and it's coming from some of the biggest names in Hollywood. The Russo brothers—Joe and Anthony, the masterminds behind Avengers: Endgame—are officially producing a reimagining of the 1993 Warner Bros. film Free Willy.
According to reports, the duo will produce the project through their AGBO banner, with Mary-Margaret Kunze and Jade Halley Bartlett penning the script. Plot details remain under wraps, but the original film followed a young boy who risks everything to save a captive killer whale from being euthanized by aquarium owners. It became a cultural touchstone, spawning sequels and even a TV series.
The Russo brothers are no strangers to massive productions. They're currently gearing up for the release of Avengers: Doomsday, which hits theaters on December 18, 2026, and will also direct its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, set for 2027. Their return to Marvel marks a major moment for the franchise, which is looking to regain momentum after a string of mixed receptions. Doomsday will face stiff competition, opening alongside Dune: Part Three later this year.
Beyond Marvel, the Russos have kept busy with a range of projects. Their Netflix film The Gray Man became one of the streamer's biggest hits, and they've produced popular TV series like From and Citadel, both of which returned with new seasons this year. They also produced the Prime Video swashbuckling epic The Bluff.
While the Russos are producing Free Willy, it's unclear if they'll direct. Given their packed schedule—including Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars—it's more likely they'll oversee the project from a producer's chair. Still, their involvement signals a major push for the remake, which could tap into the same nostalgia that has fueled other revivals.
The original Free Willy was a box office hit and remains a beloved family film. Its iconic finale—where Willy leaps over a jetty to freedom—is one of cinema's most memorable moments. A modern reimagining could update the story for a new generation while honoring the spirit of the original.
For fans of the Russo brothers, this is just one of many projects on their slate. They're also producing Avengers: Secret Wars, which is expected to be a massive event. Meanwhile, Marvel is banking on Spider-Man: Brand New Day to set the stage for Doomsday. That film, starring Tom Holland, opens in a few weeks.
As for Free Willy, no release date has been announced. But with the Russos attached, expect more details to emerge soon. Stay tuned for updates.
