We all love a good scare—preferably from the safety of our couch, lights on, blanket at the ready. Horror has given us iconic franchises like Friday the 13th and Halloween, plus unforgettable villains. But for every Scream, there’s a Hush: a forgotten horror film that’s actually quite perfect. While we celebrate the mainstream masterpieces, it’s time to honor the overlooked gems that deserve a spot in the conversation. From early works by visionary directors to stories that got overshadowed by bigger releases, these near-perfect horror thrillers are flawless from start to finish. You might just add them to your horror pantheon.
'Absentia' (2011)
Mainstream audiences know Mike Flanagan as the genius behind Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass. But before those hits, he crafted a low-budget masterpiece: Absentia. The film follows Tricia Riley (Courtney Bell), a pregnant woman about to declare her missing husband legally dead after seven years. As her recovering-addict sister Callie (Katie Parker) helps her find closure, they discover a mysterious tunnel linked to supernatural disappearances and an ancient evil.
This is atmosphere-over-jump-scares horror, driven by dread, grief, and the unknown. Flanagan leans into Lovecraftian cosmic horror, using shadows, sound, and that sinister tunnel to create an unforgettable sense of unease. A genuine indie film funded via Kickstarter, Absentia even features a cameo from Doug Jones. It’s a character-driven psychological drama that proves what’s unseen is often more terrifying than what’s shown.
'Deathdream' (1974)
Bob Clark’s Deathdream (originally Dead of Night) takes inspiration from W.W. Jacobs’ “The Monkey’s Paw” and sets it in a post-Vietnam world. Andy Brooks (Richard Backus) returns home after being killed in combat—but he’s now an undead, blood-drinking creature. The film is a chilling metaphor for the Vietnam War’s impact on soldiers and families, exploring PTSD, isolation, and the struggle to reintegrate into society.
Andy’s decay is multilayered, affecting more than just the soldier. The horror of a child changed by war is terrifying on its own, and the allegory adds depth. Deathdream is a cautionary tale wrapped in horror, and it remains a powerful, overlooked thriller.
'Eden Lake' (2008)
James Watkins’ directorial debut takes a picturesque lake and turns it into a nightmare. Jenny (Kelly Reilly) and Steve (Michael Fassbender) are a young couple whose romantic getaway becomes a fight for survival when a gang of sadistic teens, led by Brett (Jack O’Connell), terrorizes them. The film escalates from harassment to torture and murder, exploring class conflict, youth violence, and societal breakdown.
Grounded in genuine terror, Eden Lake taps into the moral panic of “Broken Britain.” The teens represent the feared “hoodies,” making the cat-and-mouse game feel real and nihilistic. It’s an intense, riveting thriller that leaves you breathless.
'Hush' (2016)
Home-invasion thrillers are common, but few are as horrifying as Mike Flanagan’s Hush. Co-written by and starring Kate Siegel, the film follows Maddie Young, a deaf and mute author living alone in a secluded cabin. A masked killer (John Gallagher Jr.) discovers her disability and turns his pursuit into a sadistic game.
A modern take on Wait Until Dark, Hush is a masterclass in minimalist suspense. Its innovative sound design immerses you in Maddie’s world, and Flanagan subverts the weak-damsel trope. The single-set atmosphere and terrifyingly realistic villain make it anyone’s worst nightmare. For more underrated gems, check out our list of forgotten Netflix miniseries.
'I See You' (2019)
Twists can make or break a thriller, but I See You delivers earned surprises. Directed by Adam Randall, the film follows detective Greg Harper (Jon Tenney) investigating a child’s disappearance while his wife Jackie (Helen Hunt) deals with his affair. Unbeknownst to them, a sinister presence is terrorizing their home. The layered narrative keeps you guessing until the end, making it a must-watch for twist lovers.
