Some crime dramas are all about power plays in wood-paneled rooms. Others dig into the blood, loyalty, and old grudges that fuel the underworld. MGM+'s upcoming series The Westies is firmly in that second lane—and we've got an exclusive first look at its terrifying kingpin.
ShowtimeSpot is thrilled to debut a new image from The Westies, starring Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, Spider-Man) as Eamon Sweeney, the head of a real-life Irish-American gang that terrorized Hell's Kitchen in the early 1980s. In the photo, Simmons sits behind a desk in a shadowy office, his expression that of a man who has heard every excuse and accepted none. It's a chilling preview of the brutality to come.
A Gritty Tale of Survival and Violence
Set during the construction boom around the Jacob Javits Convention Center, The Westies follows the Irish-American gang that, despite being vastly outnumbered by the Five Families of the Italian mafia, carved out a deadly slice of New York's criminal pie through cunning and sheer force of will. But internal tensions threaten to ignite a turf war from within—just as the FBI closes in on the mob underworld.
The series comes from Chris Brancato (Godfather of Harlem, Narcos), who serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Michael Panes. Brancato's pedigree promises a layered, historically grounded crime saga that fans of Netflix's 'Legends' will want to watch.
Meet the Cast of 'The Westies'
Alongside Simmons, the ensemble includes Titus Welliver (Bosch) as Glenn Keenan, a corrupt cop with a deeply compromised moral compass. Welliver told Collider that his character is "no Harry Bosch"—instead, he's a Vietnam vet beat cop who walks the streets but has lost his way. "This is a very, very dark world," Welliver said.
The cast also features Tom Brittney (Grantchester) as James "Jimmy" Roarke, Jessica Frances Dukes (Ozark) as Birdie Polk, Stanley Morgan (I Used to Be Famous) as Mickey Flanagan, Sarah Bolger (Mayans M.C.) as Bridget Walsh, Allen Leech (Downton Abbey) as Brendan Cahill, Hamish Allan-Headley (Mayor of Kingstown) as John Gotti, Vincent Walsh (Bad Blood) as Eddie Breen, and Hilary McCormack as Erin Malone.
What to Expect from 'The Westies'
If the first image is any indication, The Westies will be a brutal, atmospheric crime thriller that doesn't shy away from the darkness of its real-life inspirations. With Brancato's track record for gritty period pieces and Simmons's intensity, this could be the next must-watch crime saga on streaming. The Westies is set to premiere on MGM+ in 2026. Stay tuned for more exclusive updates from ShowtimeSpot.
