Dutton Ranch has hit the ground running, with the Yellowstone spin-off quickly establishing Beth and Rip's new life in Texas and setting them on a collision course with formidable new foes. But Episode 3 delivers a surprising twist: the show's most menacing antagonist has a hidden vulnerability.
In the latest installment, we learn that Annette Bening's Beulah Jackson shares a romantic past with Ed Harris' Everett. The revelation comes during Sheriff Logan's funeral, an unlikely setting for rekindling old flames. Around Everett, the usually steely Beulah softens in a way we haven't seen before, exposing a human weak spot that could reshape the series' trajectory.
This layered history was a major draw for Bening, who told Collider that the chance to work opposite Harris and explore their characters' complicated bond was irresistible. "Part of why I'm here is because I knew Ed was in the show, and Ed is such a wonderful actor," she said. "Beulah and Everett have this long, complicated history, and that for me is very intriguing to try to tap into."
Bening added that the dynamic allows the show to reveal a side of Beulah viewers might otherwise miss. "She's longing for connection, intimacy, and romance, quite frankly, with this man that she knew since she was a child," she explained. "They've kind of come in and out of each other's lives, and he's elusive."
Episode 3 makes it clear that Beulah still carries a torch for Everett, despite her initially abrasive demeanor. After some small talk about funerals, she tells him, "Well, I've missed you." It's a revealing moment that adds depth to a character who has mostly been positioned as one of the show's bad eggs.
This twist not only humanizes Beulah but also sets up potential future conflicts. As the series progresses, the unresolved tension between her and Everett could become a major plot point, especially given the high-stakes environment of the Dutton Ranch. For fans of the Yellowstone universe, this is a welcome layer of complexity.
Bening teased that the story will only get more intriguing. "As it develops, hopefully it gets more juicy for everybody," she said. With the show already delivering explosive drama, this romantic subplot promises to add even more heat to the Texas landscape.
