Paramount+’s Dutton Ranch has quickly become a fan favorite, but behind the scenes, the show’s connection to its famous creator is more distant than you might think. Several cast members have revealed that they never actually worked with Taylor Sheridan on set — despite the series being a spin-off of his mega-hit Yellowstone.

Actors James Eddie, Sterlin English, Marc Menchaca, and Juan Pablo Raba recently shared that they didn’t interact with Sheridan during filming. “But, I’ve heard great things,” English added diplomatically. Sheridan remains attached as an executive producer, but the day-to-day creative reins were held by others.

Dutton Ranch Episode 3 Twist: Annette Bening Reveals Beulah's Secret History with Everett
Episode 3 of Dutton Ranch reveals that Annette Bening's Beulah Jackson has a romantic history with Ed Harris' Everett, softening her intimidating persona and hinting at future drama.

The series was created by Chad Feehan, who served as showrunner for Season 1. However, Feehan will not return for Season 2 after reportedly clashing with cast members and Sheridan himself. Taking over is a new showrunner, though the name has yet to be officially announced.

According to Menchaca, the cast was in capable hands thanks to Christina Alexandra Voros, a director and executive producer long regarded as one of Sheridan’s most trusted collaborators. “She steered the ship,” Menchaca said of Voros, who helped maintain the show’s signature tone even without Sheridan’s daily presence.

This behind-the-scenes shake-up comes as Dutton Ranch continues to expand the Yellowstone universe. The show follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they start a new chapter in Texas after the destruction of their Montana ranch. Their adopted son Carter (Finn Little) navigates high school with two fiercely protective — and slightly unhinged — parents.

The official synopsis teases: “As Beth and Rip fight to build a future together — far from the ghosts of Yellowstone — they collide with brutal new realities and a ruthless rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire. In South Texas, blood runs deeper, forgiveness is fleeting, and the cost of survival might just be your soul.”

The cast also includes Annette Bening as Beulah, Ed Harris as Everett, and Jai Courtney as Rob-Will. With such heavyweight talent, the series has already proven it can stand on its own — even without Sheridan’s hands-on involvement.

For fans of the Taylor Sheridan neo-western empire, this news may come as a surprise. But with a new showrunner and a trusted Sheridan collaborator like Voros still on board, Dutton Ranch seems poised to keep its gritty, dramatic edge.

Dutton Ranch is streaming now on Paramount+, with new episodes airing Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Paramount Network.
