In an era where every beloved franchise gets rebooted, remade, or resurrected, Back to the Future stands as a rare untouched gem. The original 1985 sci-fi comedy, followed by two sequels that have earned their own devoted fanbases, remains sacred. That's largely thanks to director Robert Zemeckis and writer-producer Bob Gale, who hold veto power over any new installments. So while we hope the franchise stays pristine, it's fun to imagine what a 2026 remake might look like with a perfect cast. Here are our dream picks for the iconic roles.
Jennifer Parker: Zoey Deutch
Jennifer has always been the most thankless role in the series. In the first film, she's a stock girlfriend, and in the sequels, she spends most of her time unconscious. But a reboot could finally give her something to do. Enter Zoey Deutch, whose comedy chops have been on fire lately. From Zombieland: Double Tap to her recent work in Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass and Voicemails for Isabelle, Deutch brings charm and wit. She could turn Jennifer into a comedic force, not just a pretty face.
Principal Strickland: J.K. Simmons
Principal Strickland is the ever-present authority figure, appearing in every timeline as a school principal, a gun-toting badass, or a mustached sheriff. James Tolkan was perfect, but J.K. Simmons could bring his own gravitas. Simmons, an Oscar winner known for playing everything from a neo-Nazi to J. Jonah Jameson, has the commanding voice and presence to make Strickland memorable. He'd have a blast with the role's various incarnations.
George McFly: Cooper Hoffman
George McFly is essential to the first film's heart, and any new version must capture his awkward yet endearing transformation. Cooper Hoffman, son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, has proven his range in Licorice Pizza, The Long Walk, and I Want Your Sex. He can be confident or shy, charming or clumsy—all qualities needed to make George relatable without being grating.
Biff Tannen: Connor Storrie
Biff is more than a bully; he's a cosmic force of chaos across timelines. Thomas F. Wilson made him oddly lovable, and Connor Storrie could bring that same complexity. Storrie, rising thanks to Heated Rivalry and his Saturday Night Live hosting gig, has the improv background and dramatic range to explore Biff's many layers. Plus, he's got the perfect resting bully face.
Lorraine Baines: Inde Navarrette
Lorraine exists in multiple timelines, from a suffering mother to a lovestruck teen to a heavy-drinking trophy wife. Lea Thompson nailed all versions, and Inde Navarrette has the talent to do the same. Navarrette, known for her work in 3 Body Problem and The Long Walk, can balance the character's vulnerability and strength. She'd make Lorraine a standout, not just a supporting player.
Of course, the two leads are the toughest to cast. Marty McFly needs someone with Michael J. Fox's energy and charm, while Doc Brown requires a scientist with Christopher Lloyd's eccentric brilliance. For Marty, we'd suggest Tom Holland, who has the youthful charisma and comedic timing. For Doc, Jeff Goldblum could bring his own quirky genius to the role. These choices might be controversial, but they'd certainly make for an entertaining ride.
While we wait for the inevitable (or not) reboot, there are plenty of other perfect binge-worthy shows to enjoy. And if you're in the mood for more time-travel adventures, check out The Expanse for a sci-fi fix. For now, we'll keep dreaming of a Back to the Future that never comes, but it's fun to imagine.
