Donnie Yen is stepping behind the camera for his own John Wick spin-off, and the project just got a major update. The actor, who stole scenes as the blind assassin Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, has confirmed that his solo film is now in production. Alongside the announcement, the first official look at the project was shared on social media, giving fans a glimpse of what's to come.

This spin-off, simply titled Caine, marks Yen's directorial debut in the franchise. He'll also reprise his role as the formidable blind fighter, a character who quickly became a fan favorite. The film is set to begin principal photography in April 2026, with Lionsgate backing the project.

From Pixels to Prestige: The Video Game Movies That Actually Got It Right
Video game movies have a rough history, but a few gems like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Werewolves Within prove the genre can deliver genuine cinematic magic.

While plot details remain tightly under wraps, we do know that Rina Sawayama will return as Akira, the daughter of Hiroyuki Sanada's Shimazu from Chapter 4. The script comes from Robert Askins, Michael McGrale, and Mattson Tomlin—the latter also penned the upcoming Batman sequel. Notably, Keanu Reeves will not appear in this spin-off, though Chad Stahelski is on board as a producer.

The John Wick franchise has come a long way since its near-death experience in 2014. Eva Longoria famously stepped in with last-minute funding to save the first film, and now the series has spawned multiple sequels and spin-offs. The first spin-off, Ballerina, hit theaters last year but struggled at the box office, grossing $140 million against a $90 million budget. However, it found a second life on streaming via Starz.

With Caine, Lionsgate is betting on Yen's star power and directorial vision to deliver another high-octane entry in the franchise. Fans are eager to see how the blind assassin's story unfolds, especially after his memorable showdown with John Wick. The film is expected to explore Caine's past and his connection to the High Table.
