Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island has inspired countless adaptations, and now a new six-part series is set to bring the classic tale to life with a contemporary twist. Starring David Oyelowo, known for his role in Taylor Sheridan's Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the series will premiere on MGM+ in the U.S. on October 11, followed by its UK and Ireland debut on Paramount+ the next day, October 12. New episodes will roll out weekly, with the U.S. run concluding on November 15 and the UK/Ireland run wrapping up on November 16.
The series, simply titled Treasure Island, reimagines Stevenson's story by focusing on young Jim Hawkins and his fiercely determined mother, Beth, who come into possession of Captain Flint's legendary treasure map. This discovery plunges them into a brutal race for unimaginable riches, setting the stage for a high-stakes adventure filled with danger and betrayal. Created by Robert Murphy, the series is directed by Jeremy Lovering (Slow Horses), William McGregor (The Buccaneers), and Paul Walker (Shameless).
Oyelowo takes on the charismatic role of Long John Silver, a character also being portrayed by Hugh Jackman in Ridley Scott's upcoming film adaptation. The cast also includes Hayley Atwell (Avengers: Doomsday) as Beth Hawkins, Tom Sweet (Great Expectations) as Jim Hawkins, Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) as Aaron Graham, Tomer Capone (The Boys) as Billy Bones, Craige Els (Andor) as Mr. Arrow, Tristan Sturrock (Poldark) as Captain Smollett, and Neil Pendleton (Outlander) as Mr. Cameron.
This adaptation is a Paramount+ Original in association with MGM+ and Fifth Season, with Playground and Mark Hedges among the producers. The series is being produced as a limited series, so it will tell a complete story without necessarily needing a second season, unless audience reception is overwhelmingly positive. A trailer has yet to be released, but with the fall premiere approaching, fans won't have to wait much longer for their first proper look.
