The Dark Matter Season 2 finale delivered a gut-punch of a cliffhanger that has fans buzzing. After a season of navigating ever-expanding universes and the fallout from Jason's (Joel Edgerton) many doppelgängers, the Dessens finally thought they had found a way to shut down the mysterious box for good. But in a heart-stopping twist, Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and Charlie (Oakes Fegley) end up trapped inside the box just as Jason and his allies manage to power it down. Now, showrunner Blake Crouch is opening up about the finale's biggest moments and what could come next.
The Tragic Fate of Leighton
One of the most devastating moments in the finale is the death of Leighton (Dayo Okeniyi), who had just begun to see the error of his ambitious ways. Crouch reveals that Leighton's demise was always part of the plan. "From the beginning," he tells Collider. "We knew that Leighton was going to get killed by Olu — we also call him Guru Leighton. We knew that Leighton was going to get killed; we knew that Charlie and Daniela would be stranded, and those were our north stars for the second season."
Olu's Mysterious Transformation
The finale also sees Olu (played by the actor) enter a pyramid in a way that has never been seen before. Crouch explains that Olu has mastered meditation and control of thoughts to such a degree that he transcends the need for the drug that makes the corridor visible. "He actually put himself within the corridor in a super-positional state, which has never happened in the show before," Crouch says. When asked if we should be worried about Olu, Crouch's answer is simple: "Yes, very worried about him."
Jason's Obsession and the Final Twist
The biggest twist of the finale is the fate of Charlie and Daniela. Jason, who has spent the entire season trying to dismantle the box to protect his family, inadvertently strands them in another world. Crouch points out a poignant detail: Jason misses Daniela's note because he places his research on top of it. "It's a nice metaphor for what he's done the whole season, which is to put his work above the family," Crouch says. He adds that Jason is driven by obsession as much as love, and the ending forces him to confront that reality.
Introducing a New Antagonist
Season 2 also introduced a new antagonist in MacNamara, a character who poses a threat unlike any Jason has faced before. Crouch explains that they wanted to place someone in the shoes of a... (the original text cuts off here, but Crouch likely elaborates on MacNamara's role and the new challenges he brings).
What Could Season 3 Hold?
While Apple TV has not yet confirmed a Season 3, Crouch is optimistic. "We have a very cool notion for a third season, which would wrap up the show, if we're so fortunate," he says. Given the cliffhanger, fans are eager to see how Jason will rescue his family and what new threats await. For more on the show's evolution, check out our deep dive into Season 2.
A Season of Emotional Depth
Beyond the twists, Crouch also highlighted the emotional core of the season, particularly Episode 5, "Love and Be Loved," and the bottle episode "The Basic Oneness of Everything." These episodes allowed the show to explore character relationships and philosophical questions, setting it apart from typical sci-fi fare. Crouch also shared his biggest issue with sci-fi stories and how he avoids it in Dark Matter, ensuring the show remains grounded in human emotion.
As fans wait for news on a third season, the finale leaves us with more questions than answers. Will Jason find a way to bring his family home? What is Olu's new power? And what new dangers lurk in the multiverse? Only time will tell, but Crouch's teases have us on the edge of our seats.
