After years of silence, one of DC's most enigmatic antiheroes is finally stepping back into the spotlight. John Constantine, the chain-smoking occult detective with a knack for bending supernatural rules, has been officially confirmed as a playable fighter in DCKO, DC's upcoming free-to-play mobile fighting game. The announcement came alongside the game's reveal trailer, which shows Constantine trading blows—and quips—alongside some of the publisher's biggest icons.
Developed by Drop Fake and published by Warner Bros., DCKO is set to launch in 2027 for iOS and Android, with pre-registration already open. The game features a unique 2v2 tag-team combat system, allowing players to switch between characters mid-battle, chain combos, and unleash devastating dual-character Super Moves. Constantine will be part of an initial roster that includes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Nightwing, Raven, Lex Luthor, and Doomsday.
For fans who have been waiting for Constantine's return—whether in comics, TV, or games—this is a welcome development. While the character has popped up in various media over the years, his last major video game appearance was in the Injustice series. Now, he's back in a format that emphasizes teamwork and strategy. The game will offer both real-time PvP matches and story-driven PvE content, with players able to customize fighters by equipping different Super Moves and upgrading abilities over time. Drop Fake has also promised regular post-launch additions of new playable "Legends."
Constantine's inclusion in DCKO is a smart move for DC, tapping into the character's cult following and his unique blend of dark magic and street-level cunning. Unlike the godlike powers of Superman or the tactical genius of Batman, Constantine relies on wit, manipulation, and a few borrowed spells—making him a wildcard in any fight. His return also fuels speculation about his future in other DC media, including the long-gestating Constantine 2 film.
Speaking of which, Constantine 2 remains in development, though DC Studios has yet to give it an official production start or release date. Keanu Reeves is expected to reprise his role as the cynical exorcist, with original director Francis Lawrence attached and Akiva Goldsman writing the screenplay. Progress has been slow, but Reeves revealed in 2025 that the creative team finally got the green light to develop their pitch into a full script. "We pitched a story to DC Studios, and they said, 'Okay,'" Reeves said. "So we're going to try and write a script." He also promised that the sequel wouldn't go easy on its protagonist, adding, "John Constantine's going to be tortured even more."
Lawrence echoed that optimism, saying, "I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing. And Akiva, Keanu and I are super, super excited about it." While fans wait for that film, DCKO offers a chance to step into Constantine's shoes—or at least his trench coat—and throw down with the best of them.
