For three seasons, Elsbeth Tascioni has charmed her way into the confidence of suspects, using her disarming positivity and sharp legal instincts to crack cases ranging from crossword-puzzle killers to ballet-world murderers. But what happens when she meets someone who not only sees through her act but can recite her entire life story—including her divorce and career missteps—in under a minute? That's the delicious tension in Elsbeth Season 3, Episode 17, titled "High Class Problems," airing Thursday, April 30 on CBS.

Collider has an exclusive sneak peek of the episode, which pits the vibrantly dressed detective against Dr. Malory Ryan, a wealth therapist played by Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Wu. In the clip, Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) does what she does best: using her friendly, inquisitive demeanor to learn everything about her target. She asks Dr. Ryan how she got into the business of treating New York City's ultra-wealthy, and Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson) returns to provide backup. But the tables turn quickly.

Astarion Gets His Own Prequel Novel as Baldur's Gate 3 Expands into Books Ahead of HBO Series
A new line of Baldur's Gate 3 books is coming, headlined by a prequel starring fan-favorite vampire Astarion, as anticipation builds for HBO's live-action series.

Dr. Ryan, despite not hailing from a "legacy family," exudes supreme confidence in her place among the elite. She loves her work—and she's terrifyingly good at reading people. She starts by dissecting Elsbeth's ornate patterned suit, linking it to her personal fortune, then proceeds to lay out Elsbeth's entire backstory from The Good Wife and The Good Fight: her Chicago law career, the messy cases she cleaned up, and even her divorce. For once, Elsbeth is left stammering, completely exposed.

This role reversal makes Dr. Ryan a uniquely intimidating adversary. Her ability to recall her clients' deepest secrets may have led to murder, and the high-profile motorcycle crash of a billionaire's son has put her in the spotlight. But cracking a suspect who is already prepared for Elsbeth's every move will be a challenge unlike any the detective has faced.

The return of Kaya Blanke is a welcome boost for Elsbeth. Patterson's character was written off as a series regular last May, but she made a brief appearance earlier this season in Episode 3, reuniting with Elsbeth during an investigation into a killer grief influencer. Now, Kaya is back for a more substantial role, ready to help her former precinct partner take down an almost impenetrable foe.

Fans of the series will also want to check out our review of Elsbeth's 'Murder, He Wrote', which we called Preston's finest hour. And for more exclusive sneak peeks, don't miss Sarah Goldberg facing a stabby Zach Galifianakis in 'The Audacity'.

With only three episodes left after "High Class Problems" before the wait for Season 4 begins, this installment promises to be a pivotal turning point.
