Nearly two decades after The X-Files: I Want to Believe first hit theaters, creator Chris Carter is finally releasing the version he originally envisioned. The new director's cut, subtitled Vrach Frankenshteyn, is now streaming on Hulu, and it's a grittier, scarier, and more visceral take on the 2008 film.
In a recent interview, Carter opened up about the journey to restore his original vision, explaining that the studio initially pushed back on the movie's darker elements. "When I showed this movie originally to the studio, it was a longer movie, and when I showed it to the executives for a screening, they were kind of outraged," he recalled. "They called it 'torture porn' and said it wasn't the PG-13 movie they'd been promised." The film was subsequently trimmed to meet rating standards, but Carter always felt something was lost.
The new cut, which runs shorter than the theatrical version, restores some of the more intense laboratory scenes and downplays the romantic subplot between Mulder and Scully. "Between 2008 and now, we've had two reboots, and I felt like the hardcore fans had had their fill of the Mulder and Scully romance story," Carter explained. "So I downplayed that in place of the good, scary X-Files."
The subtitle Vrach Frankenshteyn is a deliberate nod to the film's Frankenstein-inspired themes. Carter revealed that the story was inspired by a real-life head transplant experiment he read about, and he wanted viewers to recognize the horror elements from the start. "I don't think it was ever truly appreciated as the Frankenstein movie that it was and is," he said.
While the director's cut is a standalone experience, Carter hasn't ruled out returning to the world of The X-Files for a new chapter. He expressed interest in continuing Mulder and Scully's story, provided it doesn't clash with Ryan Coogler's planned reboot. "I'd love to do it," he said, "but it has to be the right story."
