Chace Crawford may be best known for his roles in Gossip Girl and The Boys, but the actor still holds a soft spot for one of his earliest projects: the 2006 fantasy film The Covenant. In a recent interview, Crawford addressed the possibility of a sequel and defended the movie's campy charm.
During a conversation at SLC, Crawford was asked about The Covenant and whether he shared Sebastian Stan's playful criticism of the film. Stan, who co-starred as Chase Collins, has jokingly called it one of the campiest projects of his early career. Crawford responded with a laugh: "Listen, I get why Seb, you know… it's definitely cheesy, but it's good."
When pressed about a potential sequel, Crawford was candid: "I always joke about doing a second one, but no one's doing a second one." He added that he remains close with Stan, who appeared in the early episodes of Gossip Girl, and with Taylor Kitsch, who played Pogue Parry in the film.
Despite the movie's poor critical reception—it holds a 4% score on Rotten Tomatoes—Crawford looks back on the experience fondly. "We all had a great time. That was really my first experience," he said. "They don't make that kind of mid-budget movie anymore. But I'm sure if I went back and watched it now, it would be hilarious."
The Covenant, directed by Renny Harlin and written by J.S. Cardone, follows four teenage warlocks known as the Sons of Ipswich who attend an elite academy. When a student turns up dead, their centuries-old pact begins to unravel. The film also starred Steven Strait, Toby Hemingway, Laura Ramsey, and Jessica Lucas.
Fans of the film can stream it on Hulu, Starz, or Tubi. Crawford's comments come as he prepares for his upcoming series The Land, a drama from creator Dan Fogelman that blends the grit of Friday Night Lights with the power plays of Succession. While no release date has been announced, Crawford has teased that the show will be a gritty football drama with 'Succession' vibes.
For those who missed The Covenant the first time around, it's a prime example of mid-2000s fantasy—a genre that has seen a resurgence in recent years. If you're in the mood for more underrated fantasy picks, check out our list of hidden gem fantasy movies.
As for a sequel, Crawford's update suggests fans shouldn't hold their breath. But with the film's cult status growing over the years, who knows? Maybe one day the Sons of Ipswich will return—if only in our dreams.
