Apple TV+'s hit sci-fi series Silo has never shied away from reinventing itself, and Season 3 is proving no exception. The show, known for constantly shifting audience expectations with each revelation about the bunker's dark history, is now delivering one of its most dramatic character arcs yet—this time for the ruthless Bernard, played by Tim Robbins.
Fans were left stunned by Bernard's fate at the end of Season 2, wondering what role he would play moving forward. Now, Robbins has teased that viewers should expect a version of Bernard unlike any they've seen before, as the character officially returns in Episode 5 airing this week on July 31. Speaking exclusively with Collider's Steve Weintraub during San Diego Comic-Con, the Oscar-winning actor described the new scripts as a career highlight.
“I got a huge gift as an actor when I saw the scripts for Season 3, because it’s rare when you’re playing a part over an extended period of time that it gets to change and evolve so drastically,” Robbins said. “My character essentially has a revelation at the end of Season 2 that just propels him into a whole new way of thinking, new way of being. Physically, morally, mentally, spiritually, everything changes, which is rare as an actor to get a gift like that, and that was pure gold for me.”
While Robbins stopped short of spoiling the season, his comments confirm that Bernard's shocking return has set the stage for a fundamentally different character than the quasi-dictator we saw in the first two seasons. This transformation is a testament to the show's commitment to character development, much like other unfairly hated characters who have undergone surprising evolutions.
Cast Praises Showrunner Graham Yost
Robbins wasn't the only cast member to heap praise on creator and showrunner Graham Yost during the panel. Common described Season 3 as giving him more to do as an actor than ever before, while Jessica Henwick applauded Yost for openly sharing future storylines with the cast rather than keeping them secret. Henwick argued that some showrunners who refuse to tell actors where their characters are heading are making their jobs harder, calling the practice “infantilizing.” Yost brought the house down when he admitted that any time creators say they want to preserve an actor's "fresh eyes," they're actually saying they have no idea where the story is going.
Luckily, Silo knows exactly where it all ends. The series has been praised for its tight plotting and willingness to take risks, and Bernard's transformation is just the latest example. For fans who enjoy seeing characters evolve in unexpected ways, this season promises to deliver.
