One of the weirdest comedy-horror franchises in movie history is making a comeback. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence is rolling into theaters this August, nearly five decades after the original 1978 film became an unexpected cult sensation. This time, the murderous produce is bigger, smarter, and more ridiculous than ever—if the newly released trailer is any indication.
The original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes hit screens in 1978 as a tongue-in-cheek parody of sci-fi creature features. Made for under $100,000, it followed a town besieged by aggressive tomatoes and became a home-video phenomenon. The franchise expanded with 1988's Return of the Killer Tomatoes, which introduced Professor Gangreen (John Astin, The Addams Family) and featured a young George Clooney. Two direct-to-video sequels followed in the '90s, along with a Saturday-morning cartoon on Fox.
Now, the tomatoes are back with a vengeance in Organic Intelligence. The trailer shows the vegetables causing chaos, leaving victims desiccated and streets flowing with ketchup. The film's title plays on the concept of "organic intelligence"—described as "like artificial intelligence, but freakier." Franchise staple Wilbur Finletter (J. Stephen Peace), a paratrooper with a perpetually dragging parachute, returns to help save the day.
Peace, who co-wrote all four original films and starred in three, co-wrote Organic Intelligence with franchise co-creator Costa Dillon. David Ferino (Wardcliffe) directs, and the film is distributed by Anchor Bay Entertainment. The cast includes Dan Bakkedahl, Tom Arnold, Catherine Corcoran, Vernee Watson, David Koechner, Eric Roberts, and Myrna Velasco. John Astin also returns as Professor Gangreen in his first on-screen role in 20 years.
For fans of classic sci-fi, this sequel joins a long tradition of must-watch classic sci-fi films that have stood the test of time. The original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes remains a beloved parody, and this new installment aims to capture that same spirit of absurdity.
