Apple TV+ has dropped the first full trailer for its highly anticipated Cape Fear miniseries, and it promises a fresh, terrifying take on the classic crime thriller. Starring Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson, and Javier Bardem, the series is set to premiere on June 5 with two episodes, followed by weekly installments leading to a July 31 finale.
The story centers on Max Cady (Bardem), a man who spent 17 years in prison for a murder he claims he didn't commit. Upon his release, he sets his sights on lawyer Anna Bowden (Adams), whom he blames for his incarceration. His campaign of terror extends to her husband, fellow attorney Tom Bowden (Wilson), and their children, Natalie (Lily Collias) and Zack (Joe Anders). But this time, there's a twist: Anna may have done something in Cady's case that she desperately wants to keep hidden. As Cady's revenge spirals, the line between victim and villain blurs.
The series is created and showrun by Nick Antosca (Brand New Cherry Flavor), with Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) directing the pilot. The star-studded creative team includes executive producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg—a duo with a legendary history with this property. Scorsese directed the 1991 film adaptation, which starred Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte, after swapping the rights to Schindler's List with Spielberg. That swap proved fortuitous: Schindler's List won Spielberg his first Best Director Oscar, while Cape Fear became Scorsese's biggest commercial hit at the time.
This new adaptation is based on John D. MacDonald's 1957 novel The Executioners, which was previously adapted into the 1962 film starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, and the 1991 version. The miniseries brings a modern sensibility to the story, exploring psychological terror and moral ambiguity. For fans of heart-pounding thrillers that never let you catch your breath, this is a must-watch.
The supporting cast is equally impressive, featuring CCH Pounder (Avatar), Anna Baryshnikov (Dickinson), Jamie Hector (Bosch), Malia Pyles (Pretty Little Liars), Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy), Ted Levine (The Silence of the Lambs), Jason Scott Morgan, Margarita Levieva (Daredevil: Born Again), and Patrick Fischler (Mulholland Drive).
With its powerhouse cast, acclaimed creators, and a story that keeps audiences guessing, Cape Fear is shaping up to be one of the summer's most talked-about streaming events. For those who love top international supernatural thrillers that will haunt you, this series offers a grounded, psychological horror that's equally unsettling.
Mark your calendars: Cape Fear premieres on Apple TV+ on June 5. New episodes drop weekly, so prepare for a slow-burn descent into madness. Stay tuned to ShowtimeSpot for more updates.
