Apple TV+'s acclaimed horror-thriller series Widow's Bay has been serving up a delicious blend of chills and dark humor, set in a quaint New England seaside town that's anything but peaceful. Despite the best efforts of beleaguered Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) to attract tourists, the town's residents know the truth: the place is cursed, and the horrors are very real. Now, with Episode 4 arriving tomorrow, the scares are about to get even more personal—and they're crashing a party.
Collider has an exclusive sneak peek at the new episode, which centers on a toast delivered by Kate O'Flynn's wonderfully odd assistant, Patricia. She opens a book titled "The Perfect Toast" and delivers a warm, grateful speech about new beginnings and the joy of the present company. The camera pans around the room, capturing smiling faces and a seemingly peaceful moment in this otherwise deeply abnormal town.
But then the dread creeps in. A glance at the mirror behind the guests reveals their reflections twisted into horrifying stares, mouths unnaturally agape. It's a chilling sign that something terrible is about to unfold—yet no one in the room seems to notice. This kind of subtle, creeping horror is exactly what Widow's Bay does best, blending everyday unease with supernatural terror.
The episode, titled "Beach Reads," teases: "Make sure you pack a good read for the beach! (We do not recommend self-help books on the island)." While the synopsis is cryptic, it hints at the eerie happenings to come. In the sneak peek, Patricia's book also contains a fleeting, unsettling passage about making conversation—a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment that adds to the show's signature "fun dread."
Creator Katie Dippold, who developed the series from a spec script that helped her land a job on Parks and Recreation, told Collider that the goal was to capture an air of "fun dread" by mixing big scares with small, relatable horrors. "There are some moments when there's a lot of dread," she said. "But I would call it fun dread—the anticipation. It's not a lot of gross-out horror because that's never really been my cup of tea. I love An American Werewolf in London, where it's grounded but still has surprising moments. The show explores both big horrors—like something lurking outside—and small ones, like the awkward silence when an elevator door takes too long to close."
Since its debut, Widow's Bay has become one of the most talked-about series of 2026, earning a Certified Fresh 97% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 94% audience score. Collider's Emily Bernard gave it a 7/10, calling it "haunting, deeply rewarding, and oddly charming." The cast also includes Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey, with Hiro Murai directing.
