The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Anthony Stewart Head, the beloved British actor who brought warmth and gravitas to roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Ted Lasso. Head passed away at age 72 due to complications from pneumonia, surrounded by his family, his daughters Emily and Daisy confirmed to BBC News.
“It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many,” they said in a statement.
For millions of fans, Head will forever be Rupert Giles, the bookish Watcher who mentored and protected Buffy Summers. His performance grounded the supernatural drama with wisdom, dry humor, and fatherly tenderness. Now, his Buffy family is speaking out.
David Boreanaz and James Marsters Lead the Tributes
David Boreanaz, who played the vampire Angel, shared a simple but moving message on Instagram Stories: “RIP. He was so kind and generous of a soul.” James Marsters, who portrayed the punk vampire Spike, offered a longer reflection. “There’s a hole in the World. Anthony Head has passed on from us. He was an unflaggingly kind and steady presence on the set of Buffy, and the best actor in the cast. He was the best of us. I was lucky to have known, and learned from him. He left the world a better place for his presence. Thank you Tony for all you gave.”
Eliza Dushku, who played Faith, wrote: “Tony H, for every scene and timed shared, give thanks. Rest in love and peace, kind sir. A dear one.” Emma Caulfield, who played Anya, recalled visiting Head on the set of The Iron Lady in London. They had lunch, visited a record store, enjoyed dinner and drinks, and “laughed until our sides hurt.” She added, “There were many of these moments with this amazing human who I was lucky enough to call my friend for 27 years. He was kind and wise and a guide in troubled times. You were so loved.”

Ted Lasso Co-Stars Honor a Villain with a Heart of Gold
Head also found a new generation of fans as Rupert Mannion, the smug ex-husband of Rebecca Welton on Ted Lasso. Despite playing one of TV’s most detestable characters, Head was adored by his castmates. Brett Goldstein, who played Roy Kent, highlighted the contrast: “Anthony Head was a brilliant actor who played the worst person in the world, which was an incredible skill because he was the best person. Infinitely charming and kind and fun and a joy. He will be sorely missed. Love to his family.”
Jeremy Swift, who played Leslie Higgins, added: “Goodbye Tony, we adored you, Rest in Peace, my friend.”
Head’s ability to make audiences love to hate him—while earning real-life affection from everyone he worked with—was a rare gift. His legacy spans decades, from early stage work to iconic TV roles that defined two generations of viewers.
