Joseph Kosinski, the director behind Top Gun: Maverick, is taking audiences back to the neon-soaked decade with Miami Vice '85, a fresh big-screen adaptation of the iconic TV series. Among the stars diving into this retro world is Alden Ehrenreich, who's undergoing a serious style overhaul to fit into the gritty underbelly of 1980s Miami. While promoting his upcoming psychological thriller A Talent for Murder, Ehrenreich gave Collider's Maggie Lovitt a sneak peek at his transformation.
In Miami Vice '85, Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan step into the roles of Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, a mismatched duo of vice detectives determined to curb the flow of cocaine into Miami's sun-drenched streets. They'll face off against a deadly cartel leader played by John Leguizamo and his sinister right-hand man, portrayed by Walton Goggins. The film also boasts a colorful ensemble, including Whitney Peak (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones and the Six), Danny Ramirez (Captain America: Brave New World), Andrew Schulz (Street Fighter), Edi Gathegi (Superman), André Holland (The Knick), Michael Irby (Barry), Dominic Sessa (Tony), and Haley Lu Richardson (Ponies). While Ehrenreich's character remains under wraps, his look is already generating buzz.
As the film races toward its release, Ehrenreich is fully embracing the '80s aesthetic. He's sporting a substantial Tom Selleck-style mustache for the role, a look he's not entirely unfamiliar with. Last summer, for his role as police officer Paul Morgan in Weapons, he grew a similar soup-strainer, straight out of Super Troopers. But it's not just the facial hair—Ehrenreich is also deep in costume fittings, and he's clearly thrilled about the wardrobe. "They're great, it's very '80s, the costume designer is fantastic. I'm getting to try on all of the '80s... it all started looking like that. I'm prepping," he shared.
The excitement around Miami Vice '85 is palpable, and fans are already speculating about how the film will honor the original series while bringing something fresh to the table. With Kosinski at the helm, known for his visually stunning and high-octane storytelling, this adaptation is shaping up to be a must-see. The film is set to hit theaters on May 19, 2028, and with a cast this stacked, anticipation is only building.
Meanwhile, Ehrenreich is also gearing up for A Talent for Murder, which stars Helen Mirren as Patricia Highsmith, the author behind the Tom Ripley novels. In the film, Highsmith lives in near-total isolation in Switzerland, until a young man named Edward Ridgway (Ehrenreich) arrives, sent by her publishers to request one final Ripley novel. Directed by Anton Corbijn (A Most Wanted Man) and written by Joanna Murray-Smith, adapting her own 2014 stage play Switzerland, the movie is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 23.
For those eager to see Ehrenreich's full transformation, Miami Vice '85 promises to deliver.
