The upcoming Miami Vice remake is adding another big name to its cast. According to recent reports, Alden Ehrenreich, known for his roles in Solo: A Star Wars Story and Oppenheimer, is in talks to join the project. He would star alongside Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in the film, which is being directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick).
The movie, tentatively titled Miami Vice '85, is written by Dan Gilroy, the mind behind Nightcrawler. While plot details are still under wraps, it's said to be a reimagining of the original 1984 TV series pilot, and it's being shot in IMAX for maximum impact.
This isn't the first time Miami Vice has been adapted for the big screen. In 2006, Michael Mann directed a film version starring Colin Farrell as James Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Ricardo Tubbs. The original series, which ran from 1984 to 1990, made Don Johnson a style icon with his white suits and pastel T-shirts, while Philip Michael Thomas played Tubbs. The show was famous for its flashy visuals and killer soundtrack, but it also had a dark, serious side as a police procedural—a balance that the 2006 film struggled to strike, often losing the vibrant energy of the source material.
Kosinski, however, has a knack for reviving beloved franchises. He brought Tron back with Tron: Legacy and reinvigorated Top Gun with the record-breaking Top Gun: Maverick. His ability to blend nostalgia with fresh storytelling makes him a perfect fit for this project, and with Gilroy's sharp writing, Miami Vice '85 could finally capture the magic of the original.
Ehrenreich's addition is exciting news for fans. He first made waves in 2013's Beautiful Creatures before landing the iconic role of a young Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Despite mixed reviews, that film opened doors for him, leading to roles in Zach Cregger's Weapons and Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winning Oppenheimer. Now, he's returning to franchise territory with Miami Vice '85.
His exact role remains a mystery—whether he'll play a villain or a key member of the Miami PD, it's sure to be a compelling performance. With Jordan, Butler, and Ehrenreich on board, this remake is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated projects in Hollywood.
