Adult Swim is shaking up its late-night lineup this summer, and fans of one of its most beloved cult series are feeling the burn. The network is pulling Metalocalypse, the darkly comedic animated series about the death metal band Dethklok, from its regular rotation. In its place? Superjail!, another hyperviolent cult favorite that never quite reached the same level of popularity.

For years, Metalocalypse has been a cornerstone of Adult Swim's identity—a show that blended brutal imagery with sharp satire, following Dethklok as they become so famous they essentially form their own economy. The band's members are incompetent enough to accidentally commit murder on a regular basis, and the show's black comedy made it a standout in the network's lineup alongside hits like Rick and Morty and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Why Now? A 20th Anniversary Overshadowed

The timing of the removal is especially bittersweet: 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of Metalocalypse's debut. Instead of celebrating with a special or revival—like King of the Hill or Futurama have enjoyed—Adult Swim is quietly shelving the series. Fans who want to revisit Dethklok's adventures will have to hunt down physical copies, as the show isn't available on HBO Max. This has left many wondering if the network is turning its back on the very shows that built its reputation.

Creator Brendon Small, however, has kept the franchise alive outside of TV. He formed a real-life Dethklok band that continues to tour, and he wrote and directed the feature-length conclusion Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar in 2023. Small's ability to end the story on his own terms is a rare feat in the entertainment world, especially given the network's history of canceling cult favorites. In a 2015 interview, Small noted that Adult Swim seemed more interested in shows that could run in perpetual reruns than in giving Metalocalypse a proper finale. That prediction is now coming true as the network swaps one cult show for another.

What the Switch to Superjail! Means

Superjail! shares Metalocalypse's love of over-the-top violence and dark humor, but it never achieved the same cultural footprint. The swap suggests Adult Swim is doubling down on a formula of shock value and rerun-friendly content, rather than investing in new, groundbreaking series. Currently, much of the network's schedule is filled with endless repeats of American Dad! and Rick and Morty, which draw viewers but feel safe compared to the experimental spirit of earlier years.

Still, there's hope on the horizon. Adult Swim has announced a slate of new programming, including an animated adaptation of Anthony Bourdain's graphic novel Get Jiro! and Genndy Tartakovsky's Heist Brothers. These shows could recapture the network's adventurous roots—or they could be the next casualties of a shifting strategy.

For now, Metalocalypse fans are left to mourn the loss of a series that defined a generation of adult animation. As the network pivots, one thing is clear: the days of Dethklok on late-night TV are over, but the band's legacy—and its real-world tours—will keep the metal alive.
