ABC is doubling down on its crime thriller universe. The network has officially ordered The Rookie: North to series, giving fans a fresh spin-off to sink their teeth into. This comes hot on the heels of The Rookie being renewed for Season 9, proving that ABC sees serious potential in expanding its procedural empire.
The new show stars Jay Ellis (Top Gun: Maverick, Running Point) as Alex Holland, a police officer who feels stuck in a midlife rut. After a violent home invasion shakes him to his core, he joins the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie. It's a classic second-chance story with high stakes and plenty of heart.
Ellis leads a talented ensemble that includes Karen Fukuhara (The Boys), Chris Sullivan, Froy Gutierrez, Janet Montgomery, Mya Lowe, and Malik Watson. Fukuhara recently told Collider that she had just wrapped filming the pilot, and the cast was eagerly awaiting the green light. Now that it's official, production is expected to ramp up quickly.
This isn't ABC's first attempt at a The Rookie spin-off. In 2022, the network launched The Rookie: Feds, but it was canceled after just one season. Fans are hoping The Rookie: North will have better luck, especially given the strong creative team behind it. The series was written by Alexi Hawley, who also created the original show.
