The Star Wars franchise is a cultural juggernaut, but its track record with actors is surprisingly spotty. While George Lucas's original vision launched a billion-dollar empire, the saga has often failed to give its performers the material they deserve. From sidelined fan-favorites to characters left on the cutting-room floor, here are 10 actors the galaxy far, far away did dirty.
Jimmy Smits as Bail Organa
Jimmy Smits was a massive TV star when he joined the prequels as Senator Bail Organa. The role felt like a setup for something bigger—after all, Organa is Leia's adoptive father and a key figure in the Rebellion. Yet the films never explored his friendship with Obi-Wan Kenobi, despite Leia's classic line about them serving together in the Clone Wars. Smits briefly returned in the disappointing Obi-Wan Kenobi series, but was then recast with Benjamin Bratt in the acclaimed Andor. He missed out on being part of one of the franchise's best stories.
Rose Byrne as Dorme
Before she became a comedy queen in Bridesmaids and a dramatic powerhouse in Damages, Rose Byrne had a blink-and-you'll-miss-it role in Attack of the Clones. She played Dorme, one of Padmé's handmaidens, but the character had zero personality. Byrne joined a list of future Oscar nominees (Sofia Coppola, Keira Knightley) wasted as Naboo wallpaper. Luckily, she moved on quickly, landing the Emmy-winning legal drama Damages shortly after.
Richard E. Grant as General Enric Pryde
Richard E. Grant is the kind of actor who elevates every scene he's in. So it was a treat to see him join The Rise of Skywalker as the sinister General Pryde. Unfortunately, that film is widely considered the worst in the saga, and Grant's character is killed off in a bafflingly anticlimactic way. It's a waste of an Oscar-nominated talent who could have been a memorable villain in a better movie.
Naomi Ackie as Jannah
Naomi Ackie is a rising star—she'll soon be seen in Bong Joon-ho's Mickey 17—but The Rise of Skywalker gave her almost nothing to do. Her character, Jannah, is a former stormtrooper who joins Finn's rebellion, but the film never explores that intriguing premise. Instead, she's stuck in a confusing scene with Lando Calrissian that leaves viewers wondering if she's his daughter or just a random flirtation. It's a total misfire.
Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico
Kelly Marie Tran's Rose Tico was a highlight of The Last Jedi, delivering the film's most important message: saving what you love is better than destroying what you hate. But after a toxic fan backlash, Disney drastically reduced her role in The Rise of Skywalker, leaving her stuck at the base while the main trio goes on an adventure. It was a cowardly move that punished an actor for the sins of a hateful minority.
Keri Russell as Zorii Bliss
Keri Russell is an Emmy-winning star of The Americans and The Diplomat, but you'd barely know it from her Star Wars appearance. She played Zorii Bliss, a bounty hunter with a past connection to Poe Dameron, but the character is given almost no screen time. It feels like a role that was heavily cut in editing, leaving Russell to do little more than stand around in a cool mask.
These actors deserved better. Whether it's due to poor writing, fan toxicity, or studio cowardice, Star Wars has a habit of wasting incredible talent. Hopefully, future projects will learn from these mistakes—and give these performers the roles they truly deserve.
